Self-described as “Two passionate writers determined on the betterment of our community.” During this tumultuous news cycle, they are engaging in politics and social justice discourse to give their peers another choice for news.
Los Angeles has once again made history (again)! Black, Brown, and indigenous youth across L.A. have organized for years for youth programs instead of punishment & lockups! Their work paid off this week when the L.A. County Board just approved Item #19. They voted unanimously to invest in a new Development of Youth Department via Youth Justice Workgroup report!
Cakes 4 Casualties founder and baker Kath Ryan has been filling hearts and bellies since 2009. She has been baking thousands of cakes for service people who have been injured, many as they recover from wounds in the hospital. As Kath put it, "There are times in life you're meant to be somewhere, aren't you?"

It is Transgender Awareness Week!! Biden has promised to reverse Trump's ban on trans individuals serving in the military as well as making room for them at his table of leadership. So far, Biden’s Transition Team is partially built of People of Color, women, and LGBTQ people. His staff and senior staff are not all white, cis, able-bodied men. There is more work to be done to make his team truly reflect America but it is a collective step forward. You deserve representation, respect, and of course, basic human rights (we actually believe you deserve a whole lot more than this list)!
Elderly Chinese care home residents have been recreating classic paintings and social media is LOVING it. Nursing staff help to style their outfits and do their makeup. These stunning photos are nothing in comparison to the confidence, joy, and laughter of the participating residents.
Professional Rock Climber and Adventurer, Emily Harrington. A prominent figure in the climbing community starting as a teen, she is now exploring her true passion for outdoor climbing and mountains. Emily became the 4th person and the first woman to free-climb El Capitan in under 24 hours! 21 hours 13 min 51 seconds to be exact!
Millie Bailey is known for her fireball personality. Friends describe her as daring and courageous. Millie decided to tandem skydive at 102 years old! True to her nature she was cool as a cucumber before the jump and celebrated upon completion.
Sydney Barber is now the first Black woman to be a US Naval Academy Brigade Commander. She will assume the highest leadership position within the US Naval Academy, overseeing the day-to-day activities and professional training of 4,400 of her fellow midshipmen. This marks a victory, breaking one of the final leadership barriers in the institution’s 175-year history!

"Maathai stood up courageously against the former oppressive regime in Kenya Her unique forms of action have contributed to drawing attention to political oppression—nationally and internationally. She has served as inspiration for many in the fight for democratic rights and has especially encouraged women to better their situation."
— The Norwegian Nobel Committee, in a statement announcing her as the 2004 Nobel Peace Prize winner.
This powerful woman reminds us never to step back from a fight in the midst of injustice and that “failure” might be exactly what our lives need to really do the work that needs to be done.

· The women in Kandahar, Afghanistan are hitting the gym. In this conservative city, women are discouraged from taking control of their own bodies. Good News, the women are improving their physical and mental health in secret (safely).
· The extraordinary Maestro João Carlos Martins and the tool (affordable bionic gloves) that allowed him to play the piano once again. Two pieces of a puzzle reconnect in this wholesome story. Watch the joy of a musician reunited with his other half.
· The president of Macalester College in St. Paul, MN is using her power and privilege to fight injustice. Dr. Suzanne Rivera has (again) offered to cover bail and any other fines for Macalester students arrested for "civil disobedience" who can't afford to pay! · In a three-part story you won’t want to miss, Emily talks about E-Nable. This organization consists of a global network of volunteers who use their 3D printers, design skills, and personal time to create free 3D printed prosthetic hands for those in need. Their goal is to provide free prosthetic hands to underserved populations around the world.
· The L.A. County Board of Supervisors approved a motion calling for county counsel and other staff to report back with “options for removing or impeaching” the elected sheriff, Alex Villanueva. This win is the first step in a hard-fought battle. Los Angeles your voices are being heard. Local organizing groups have been hard at work to make sure people in positions of power are being held accountable for their actions, resulting in a safer LA for all Angelenos.

The presidential election has come and gone, but voter suppression and the activists who have fought to protect and reinstate voting rights are on our minds.
Emily shares the story of the rising star of the Democratic Party, Stacey Abrams.
Born in Madison Wisconsin, raised in Gulf Port Mississippi, and Atlanta, GA Stacey Abrams was not a stranger to voter suppression or social justice work. Georgia has a long and well-documented history of voter suppression.
Her parents were involved in the civil rights movement starting as teens and raised their 6 children to appreciate and understand the power of a vote.
Currently, in her impressive career, this creator of opportunity holds the roles of politician, lawyer, voting rights activist, and author. Her work to combat voter suppression has brought her name to the public eye recently. The praise is well deserved as Abrams is credited with 800,000 successful voter registrations prior to the presidential election.
