Who told Mary & Joseph there was no room at the inn? What do we assume happens when the Samaritan leaves the half-dead guy at the inn? What role does hospitality play in our culture and in our life? How is God calling each of us to extend ourselves for the benefit of others, to welcome them in and give them a place to renew/refresh?

In the story of Jesus, many people had specific moments that have helped us understand the amazing nature of Christ as a person. Being led by the Spirit, Simeon is told he’ll see the Messiah before death—and in seeing Jesus—pronounced Him as such. Anna lived a life of worship and declared Jesus’ identity to those gathered in the temple. In what ways do we celebrate & praise the life of Christ?

Upon hearing the prophecy that the King of the Jews had been born—Jesus the Messiah—the current King of the Jews named Herod began to seek out information as to where Jesus was. Joseph & Mary were warned to flee to Egypt, where they remained until Herod’s death. Out of fear, Herod reacted violently—and against God’s wishes—to preserve the present.

Elizabeth & Zechariah were promised a child at an older age. Zechariah's disbelief resulted in becoming mute. When Elizabeth was well into her pregnancy, Mary visited in fear yet received consolation, and Elizabeth's baby lept for joy. In accordance with the angel's prophecy, Zechariah regained speech to name his son John, who would prepare the way for Jesus.

Why is silence so hard to deal with? We’re constantly surrounded with “voices” that influence our thoughts, feelings & behavior—movies, music, TV, computers, cell phones and a never-ending barrage of advertising. Maybe there’s a connection between the amount of noise in our lives and our inability to hear God. If God sometimes feels distant to us, maybe it’s not because He’s not talking to us, but simply because we aren’t really listening.

For three years, Jesus & His disciples went from town to town healing & teaching. At each stop, the generosity of those local made possible the ministry He was offering. We give financially to things every day­­: food, entertainment, material possessions. Although these things have value, none are eternal. If you were God, would you invest more in you? We naturally give back when someone gives us a Christmas card or gift; why not also to God?

What makes the story of Jesus so compelling is how it intersects with ours. Many times, we have trouble telling or connecting our story. As we look back and see God’s grace active in our lives, we can’t do anything but share it with others. This is what draws others to Jesus, so when we tell our story, we’re sharing Jesus with others!

We want folks to be connected to God through a faith community but approach it through hunting more often than through farming. What if we were to cultivate the relationships we’re already in, or pray for God to bring to mind one person we could connect by Christmas?

Saul’s conversion to Paul tells a powerful story about Paul’s dependency on God and the needed help of Ananias to regain his sight. Likewise, our transformation never happens on our own. It takes the persistent, pursuing love of God and the help of those around us to find our way. Once we do, our lives & stories become powerful witnesses of Christ’s love.
