The City of Saskatoon continues to move ahead with its plan to build a new downtown arena and entertainment district. Newly-proposed means of paying for the new arena without increasing property taxes for residents were on the agenda with a report presented on Wednesday to the Governance and Priorities Committee at Saskatoon City Hall. 650 CKOM senior reporter, Lara Fominoff, reported on the meeting and joins Gormley to discuss what happened.

On Friday, the University of Saskatchewan Huskies football team played for a sold-out crowd -- record setting at more than 10,000 spectators. Once the game had ended, however, most of those same spectators spent an hour in their vehicles waiting to leave the parking lot because of a check stop set up as they exited campus. On Wednesday, Gormley spoke with a representative from the U of S to try and pinpoint who was responsible for the traffic stop. Today, he is joined by Saskatoon Police Service Deputy Chief Cam McBride to figure out what exactly happened Friday night.

Elaine Walkom has been wanting to leave a lasting legacy for her husband in the form of a $2 million donation for an MRI machine and two trained technicians in her hometown of Estevan. Having spoken to various professionals, Walkom has learned the MRI is needed in Estevan and would help provide many people access to closer necessary medical help. However, she has spent the past two years in frustrating discussions with the Government of Saskatchewan that make her worry her dream will never happen. She joins Gormley to share her story and concerns.

In the midst of the ongoing shortage of health care workers in Saskatchewan, the province continues to work on recruiting and retaining workers in the field. Newly-appointed health minister, Everett Hindley, joins Gormley to discuss the present push to recruit, efforts to retain, give an update on mental health and addictions efforts and discuss his new ministerial role.

Military Family Appreciation Day is on Sept. 15, a national day declared by the Canadian government to recognize military families for their sacrifice. More than 10,000 families with the military each year must relocate an almost half go an average of four months without their loved one while they are deployed. One such family member is Eleanor Millar, a working military mother and military and government relations officer at the Canadian military family non-profit, Together We Stand. She joins Gormley to speak to the realities that military families like her own face and the importance of Military Family Appreciation Day.

A new and updated Moderna vaccine became available in Canada on Tuesday after Health Canada gave it the green light for anyone over the age of six months. According to the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA), the province is also gearing up for a triple-threat flu season that will see people affected by influenza, COVID-19 and respiratory syncytial virus. Saskatchewan’s provincial health officer, Dr. Saqib Shahab joins Gormley to discuss the new vaccine and trends in illness the SHA is presently observing.

While bats to some are a nocturnal nightmare, the flying mammals can be invaluable -- especially in Saskatchewan, as they eat pests that can hurt crops. But bats are facing a fatal fungal disease, called White-nose Syndrome, that is threatening their survival. Researchers at the University of Saskatchewan are studying the disease. Outreach Coordinator Lauren MacDonald joins Gormley to share more about the study.
