Gospel Hall Audio

John Miller grew up in an Amish family and community in Pennsylvania, USA. He was baptised and made a commitment to try his hardest to keep the rules of the Amish, but he could never find peace. God brought some people who knew the gospel of the grace of God into John’s life. Through them he obtained a Bible in English. Listen to hear how God revealed Himself to John through the Scriptures and saved a “proud, religious  37 year old Amish man” by His amazing grace. Philip Harding (1932-2017) grew up in a godly home in South Wales, but in his teen years he learned to gamble, to drink and to dance, though he kept up a respectable image and continued to attend church. But God intervened in his life in January 1951, when a stranger approached young Philip and his friends and challenged them about their sin and danger of judgement. God used this incident to convict Philip of his need of salvation. He was saved shortly afterwards, trusting in Christ and His work on the cross. After his marriage to Gwen, a Gospel Tent came to a nearby village, with Walter Norris and Willie Trew preaching in it nightly. The two preachers taught the young couple the truth of the local assembly resulting in them coming into fellowship with the assembly at Port Talbot. Philip threw himself into the Lord’s work and, after moving to Yorkshire in 1965, was commended to full time service. He spent the rest of his days preaching and teaching the Word of God in many parts of the world. In this recording he preaches on John 14:1-3 (Message preached at the Larne Conference, 2007)

Sam Jennings (1928- ) relates the story of his conversion to Christ on 29th November 1944. Sam’s father was a brilliant violinist, but sadly also a violent alcoholic. In his youth, Sam tried to live by the Sermon on the Mount, but failed miserably. As a teenager he developed a foul mouth and was considered “the vilest person” in the bakery where he worked. But God saved his brother Rowan, and Sam ended up hearing the gospel preached by none less than Frank Knox, accompanied by Thomas Little, in Windsor Gospel Hall, Belfast. If you’ve ever wondered what it was like to hear Frank Knox in his prime, Sam’s description could hardly be bettered. Mr Sam McBride grew up in rural Co Armagh hearing the gospel from a young age. He always knew he needed salvation, but let himself drift into adulthood without it. A serious spinal injury in the summer of 1949 left him needing a major operation. Fearing complications, Sam McBride resolved “I cannot go for that operation until I have the matter of my salvation settled.” Listen to hear how he was finally saved on 17th Feb 1952. Mr McBride preached the gospel as a full-time evangelist for many years afterwards. Readings: Job 33:14-22, 27-30, Psa 118:16-18, Rom 5:6, 1 Pet 3:15 (Testimony given in Fintona Gospel Hall, during a series of gospel meetings with Mr John Thompson in 1988).

Will Penfold (1922-2001) was saved in May 1933 in Ruislip, Middlesex. After a few years in the south east of England, he moved to Bicester in 1964. The assembly in Bicester commenced a year later in 1965 in Will and his wife Ruth’s house in Wendlebury, moving to the Bicester town in 1968. Here’s a recording of Will Penfold from the early 1970’s preaching on “the Kings who did that which was right in the sight of the Lord”. The photo here shows the “upper room” in which the first breaking of bread took place in 1965.

Jack Gould tells the wonderful story of the progress of the gospel among the Hutterite colonies of Manitoba, Canada. Hutterites are religious group who share a common European ancestry with the Mennonites and Amish, differing with them in that they believe in sharing their possessions in common and thus living in ‘colonies’. Jack Gould has been labouring among the Hutterites for a number of years and here tells the thrilling story of souls being saved and lives being transformed. (Report given at the Lurgan Conference 2010).

In November 2000, Albert Hull (1936-2015) told the story of his conversion, during a gospel message he preached at the Stark Road Gospel hall annual conference in Livonia, Michigan U.SA.

Saved in 1957, listening to the Word preached through the open windows of a small and struggling series of gospel meetings, Albert ever after revelled in the grace of God, and rarely missed an opportunity to tell of it with enthusiasm and joy.

Andrew Bergsma (1930-2013), whose whole family was “reached through a rice pudding”, tells the thrilling story of the early days of gospel labour in the Netherlands in the 1960’s where large numbers attended gospel meetings, souls were saved and assemblies planted. Andrew was a true evangelist, with an evangelist’s heart, full of infectious gospel fervour and willing to labour both on and off the platform.
