Episode Theme: A fresh era in tennis is here — new contenders, new systems, and a whole new belief that you don’t need to be Federer to make it.
🎾 What This Episode Is Really AboutThe “Big Three” era is winding down. Federer’s retired, Nadal’s winding up his career, and while Djokovic is still in the mix — his dominance is no longer guaranteed. That shift has opened the floodgates for a new wave of players, and this episode unpacks what that means for the pros, the weekend warriors, and the future of the game.
In just 12 action-packed minutes, Shaun and Justin break down-
Today’s podcast isn’t a surface-level chat. It’s a quick-hit, insight-packed episode that connects elite tennis with the everyday player — and reveals why belief, opportunity, and adaptability matter more than ever.
Key Insights You’ll Get from the PodcastFor nearly two decades, men’s tennis was locked behind an impenetrable wall — Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic. If you weren’t one of them, your chances of breaking into the top tier were slim. That’s no longer the case. With Federer retired, Nadal in his final seasons, and Djokovic not quite as dominant, the field is wide open. We're seeing more players from outside the traditional elite ranks crack into the top 10 and top 20 — not just as one-hit wonders, but as serious contenders.
U.S. Players Making a ComebackIt’s been a long time since American men were a serious force in tennis. But that’s changing fast. Right now, a growing number of U.S. men are climbing the rankings and proving they belong in the world’s top 100. The women’s side already has strong representation, but the men are catching up — thanks in part to a more structured development path and belief that they can actually compete without getting steamrolled in the first round.
🏫 College as a Viable PathwayThe average top 100 male player is now in his late 20s — and that’s a big deal. It means the door is wide open for college players who develop a little later. Unlike the old model that glorified teenage prodigies, today’s pro landscape rewards those who grind, evolve, and find their game over time. And no system supports that better than American college tennis, which gives players time to mature, build fitness, develop tactics, and rack up experience before hitting the pro circuit.
👟 Imperfect Technique, Real ResultsNot every top player has picture-perfect strokes — and that’s okay. Players like Daniil Medvedev have unique styles that break all the textbook rules… and they win. That sends a powerful message: clean technique isn’t the only path to success. If your game works, it works. Whether it’s a quirky backhand, unconventional footwork, or an unorthodox serve, what matters is finding what works for you — and believing in it.
💼 You Don’t Need to Be a Superstar to SucceedThere’s a misconception that if you’re not winning Grand Slams, you’re failing. But players ranked in the 30s, 50s, or even 90s are making real money, building real careers, and staying in the game into their 30s. Some are even paying off houses in cash. This episode highlights that tennis doesn’t have to be all-or-nothing. There’s a strong middle class in pro tennis now — and the grind is worth it.
🧠 From Pro Tour to Public Courts: What It Means for YouThis conversation isn’t just for elite players — it applies to coaches, club players, and weekend warriors, too. What can you take away from this new era? You don’t have to fix every flaw in your game. You just need to use your tools better. When Djokovic and Alcaraz are still tweaking their serves mid-career, it shows that growth never stops. The takeaway? Get a coach, work with what you’ve got, and build confidence in your own style.

Guest: Fernando Segal
Hosts: Shaun Boyce & Bobby Schindler
Runtime: ~54 minutes
Episode Theme: Reimagining tennis through coaching, systems, and innovation — with a look back at its 151-year history!
🎾 What This Episode Is Really AboutWhat does tennis need more of — better athletes or better systems?
Fernando Segal has a clear answer: SYSTEMS! Not just for developing elite players, but for building up coaches, programs, and a sport that’s struggling to keep up with modern attention spans, new competition (tennis, pickleball), and outdated thinking.
This isn’t a surface-level conversation. It’s a sweeping, honest, and highly practical look at the sport — from its 1870s origins to where it’s headed next. Whether you're a coach, parent, player, or tennis decision-maker, this episode lays out a compelling case for rethinking how we grow the game.
Fernando has spent 45 years building tennis programs across five countries, leading national tennis development efforts, and founding the World Tennis Conference — an annual event dedicated to educating and empowering high-performance coaches. In this episode, he shares what works, what’s broken, and how we can rebuild tennis from the ground up.
📌 Key Themes and Ideas We ExploreTennis might have global reach, but it’s not winning the cultural battle. While millions play, few understand how to grow the game in a sustainable way. Fernando breaks down the sport’s biggest blind spots: a lack of coaching structure, over-reliance on stars, and weak player pathways.
He argues that development is still too random, too star-driven, and too reactive — and outlines what a proactive system could look like.
Fernando’s LONG Story: From Mar del Plata to the World!Fernando shares how his roots in Argentina — under the coach who trained Guillermo Vilas — set him on a lifelong mission to improve tennis through education. He details how coaching excellence isn’t just about technique, but leadership, imagination, and creating pathways for others to grow.
His journey spans five continents, including leadership roles in Argentina, Mexico, Brazil, Australia, and New Zealand, where he focused on building national structures that would outlast any one player or trend.
The World Tennis Conference: A Blueprint for Global CoachingWhat if coaches had the same support system players do? That’s the idea behind the World Tennis Conference, which Fernando founded to give coaches access to elite minds and cutting-edge knowledge. Now in its fifth year, the WTC features over 70 speakers — including coaches with 38 combined Grand Slam titles — and covers everything from biomechanics to human development.
Fernando breaks down how the conference is structured, why it’s online-first, and why even coaches working with beginners benefit from a high-performance mindset.
151 Years of Tennis: What the Sport Has ForgottenFernando walks us through the little-known (and hilarious) history of tennis — including how it was originally branded Sphairistikè before wisely rebranded to lawn tennis. But his point isn’t nostalgia. He explains how tennis was born from innovation, simplicity, and accessibility. And we’ve lost touch with that spirit.
He explains why tennis needs to reconnect with its roots, make play more accessible, and reimagine how the game is taught — especially to adults and newcomers.
🧠 Memorable Concepts & Ideas You’ll HearIf you work in tennis, coach part-time, raise a young player, or just care about the future of the sport, this episode delivers. You’ll get value from it if you are-
Tennis is 151 years old. But it won’t last another century if it doesn’t evolve. Fernando Segal makes the case that we don’t need to reinvent the game — we just need to remember what made it great in the first place: accessibility, creativity, purpose, and structure.
This episode pushes past tradition, calls out what isn’t working, and brings practical, powerful ideas to the table — not from a distance, but from someone who’s spent his life doing the work.
After all, it’s not just a history lesson. It’s a roadmap.
🎧 Listen now and join the movement to rethink, rebuild, and reenergize the game of tennis — from the court to the culture.

Jack Draper is one of the fastest-rising tennis players in the world. He is establishing a name for himself on the ATP Tour and rising up the rankings quickly. But how did he get here?
In this episode, we hear from Draper’s longtime coach, Justin Sherring. Sherring met Draper when he was only six years old and has since worked with him to develop into a strong, skilled, and confident player.
He shows players how to fight, handle pressure, and win points under challenging situations. He has worked with numerous prominent players, including the Grand Slam doubles champion Joe Salisbury.
Tune in to hear about Draper’s evolution from a small kid to a 6'4" machine. Understand the mental and physical struggle of becoming a professional player. And discover what it takes to play at the highest level in tennis!
About Today’s GuestToday we’ve invited Justin Sherring who has decades of experience in coaching tennis players. During his coaching journey, he has worked with some of the brightest stars in British Tennis like Jack Draper and Joe Salisbury. This journey shaped his coaching career and attained him tremendous success and fame.
Unlike most tennis players, Justin’s coaching style is deeply rooted in enhancing mental resilience, making the players more confident and getting the victory. In today's discussion he will reveal many areas of his coaching journey that most tennis enthusiasts don’t know.
So highly encourage you to hit the play button and get more intrigued!
What This Episode DiscussesIt has been an incredibly long journey with Jack since he was a kid, and Justin Sherring was there every step of the way. He explains how Jack displayed tremendous fighting spirit though smaller than most of his contemporaries, that would characterize his career. Sherring also explains how struggle and determination helped shape Jack’s career from the ground up.
2. The Role of Mindset in TennisTennis is a mental battle, as much as it is a test of physical skill. In this episode Sherring explains how a strong mindset helped him to make a player to be dominant at the court. He also explains how this attitude has been vital to Jack’s success, and how he instills this belief in his other players.
3. Understanding Jack Draper’s Unique StyleOne huge advantage for Jack is that he is a left-handed player. And Sherring utilized this in every angle of his game to bring out his best. To develop Jack’s serving technique and leverage his lefty advantage, Sherring offers a granular look at how he and Dana developed a winning formula for Jack.
4. The Coach-Player DynamicAt the end of the day, the final outcome of a player depends on their chemistry with the coach. Sherring explains how mutual respect and shared goals can form a strong bond with players and how important it is. He notes how crucial it is for coaches to care deeply about the holistic development of their players, not merely as athletes, but as individuals.
5. Joe Salisbury - A Different JourneyThe podcast also shares Justin's work with Joe Salisbury, a multiple Grand Slam-winning doubles player. Sherring talks about the interesting journey of Joe who faced a significant setback in his career due to glandular fever. Sherring explains how they changed his training to shift from singles to doubles. And this change has helped Joe dramatically to become dominant in the doubles circuit.
6. The 'Killer Instinct' in TennisThe so-called "killer instinct" is one of the most critical attributes of elite players. Sherring explains why this trait distinguishes good players from great ones, and how to instill this all consuming passion to win in upcoming athletes. He also explains how this mindset is often an inherited trait but can be developed through effective coaching.
7. The Coaching Philosophy of Justin SherringJustin is definitely not the conventional coach, but he gets results. His emphasis is on a player-driven style, getting into character development before anything else. A foundation of Sherring’s coaching philosophy is building an environment where return on investment requires an understanding of the value of what it takes to persist, be resilient and to improve.
Be Our Next Guest! We want more guests like Justin Sherring. If you are also a coach like him, we want to hear your voice. No matter if you are a coach, club manager, tennis player, or just a tennis enthusiast who has any interesting story related to tennis, we want you to visit our My Tennis Story page and share your words. If your words can resonate with the tennis community, one of our next episodes will invite you as our guest.
