  • Tennis Tip: Run Like a Tennis Match!
Season 24 Episode #8 Ben Hestley and Shaun J Boyce

Today, we’ve invited Ben Hesley to our studio, where he’ll share some pro tips to improve your off-court conditioning for tennis. Ben is from Bull Shark Sports and has years of tennis experience. In today’s episode, he’ll share some unique tips that many pro-level tennis players overlook that can significantly determine the difference between your victory and defeat.

    What This Short Session Includes

    • Why Long-Distance Running Might Not Be Best for Tennis: Long-distance running utilizes a different part of the cardiovascular system than tennis needs, Ben explains. Tennis takes bursts of energy, not endurance runs.
    • Better Conditioning for Tennis: Instead of long distance running, Ben suggests doing interval training. That means sprinting short distances (20-50 yards or so) and walking or jogging the same distance or amount of time. This is closer to the experience of a tennis match.
    • How to Use Intervals in Your Training: Ben has straightforward advice on how to time your runs. You can sprint for 10-20 seconds, then walk or jog for the same duration. This will be developing the right kind of fitness for tennis.
    • Get Tennis-Ready Fitness: By this type of training, you will be in better condition to play tennis. Developing greater stamina will boost your performance in games.

  • 10 Minutes of Tennis: AUS Open Week 2
Episode #6 Season 25: Shaun Boyce & Justin Yeo

Another episode of the GoTennis! Podcast is here, presented by Signature Tennis! In this rapid-fire 10-minute episode, host Shaun Boyce sits down with Justin Yeo, an expert tennis coach and true insider into the world of tennis. Today we’re diving into the excitement of the blazing moments of this season, determining key matchups, and reframing emerging players on tour.

Whether you are a die-hard tennis fan, a player seeking some words of wisdom, or someone who is still exploring this sport, this episode is truly a Grand Slam of valuable insights, expert commentary, and stimulating dialogue.

    About Justin Yeo

Justin Yeo is a tennis coach in Puerto Rico, who has coached at the highest levels of the game. Throughout all his years, Justin has cultivated a deep understanding of the mental and physical side of tennis, guiding everyone from juniors to pros to their peak. His deep insight into the game covers everything including technique, player development, the modern day trends within professional tennis and above all the strategies wonderfully. Justin’s consummate work ethic and love for the game make his opinions in demand within the tennis community.

Key Insights You'll Get in 10 Minutes

In 10 minutes (13+ minutes to be more specific!) you’ll be treated to a fast-paced conversation covering some of the spicier subjects in the tennis world now. So, what exactly will you learn from this episode?

Italian Wave at the Australian Open

Justin and Shaun discuss the Italian tennis stars making waves at the Australian Open, with a particular focus on Jannik Sinner. With this run, Sinner will be a player to watch for years to come, and we break down his game and why he’s a serious threat at Grand Slam tournaments.

Djokovic vs Alacaraz – The Battle Royale

This episode explores the epic clash between Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz, dissecting their differing playing styles, mental fortitude, and how one can cope against competing at such rarefied levels. Justin gives his take on what it takes to be a champion like Djokovic and why the rise of Alcaraz is something to tune in for in tournaments to come.

    The American Tennis Revival

After a decade of searching for the next American tennis great, America is experiencing a renaissance with players like Ben Shelton and Madison Keys. Shaun and Justin discuss how these players are beginning to break through, and why they’re set to threaten the elite of the sport.

    The Evolution of Women’s Tennis

Justin explains how the women’s game has evolved, emphasizing aggressiveness and power over finesse. He examines how younger, harder-hitting players are challenging stars like Coco Gauff and Iga Świątek — and why this trend is changing the way women’s tennis is played.

    The Future of Tennis:

The episode ends with a sense of perspective, observing how the younger generation of players is starting to take on the current stars. From Carlos Alcaraz’s potential to other young talents breaking through, the tennis world is at the verge of a big generational shift.

Things You May Find Interesting in This Episode

It’s an interesting, deep dive into some of the game’s more interesting aspects and sounds like a blast to listen to. Here are some highlights:

    The “Hawaiian Ironman” Metaphor

Justin uses a cool metaphor likening the apex mental and physical challenge of facing Djokovic in a Grand Slam — universally considered the toughest task in tennis — to the rigors of the Hawaiian Ironman triathlon. It’s an unusual perspective that provides insight into what it takes to compete at the highest level.

    Madison Keys’ mental edge

Justin and Shaun unpack the psychological aspect of Madison Keys’ game, and how her self-belief has been a key factor in her success. Could Keys be the next American to go deep in a major? This part of the conversation is relatable to every tennis player and fan.

The Rise of the “Next Big Three”

Is tennis on the cusp of a new “Big Three” with Alcaraz, Sinner and other young talent? Justin discusses whether the men’s game is ready for a new crop of dominant players to take over and what the implications could be for the sport going forward.

How Aggression Is Changing Women’s Tennis

With Gauff and Świątek leading the charge, Justin writes about how the women’s game has become a lot more aggressive — with power plays and speed now deciding who the best players are. It’s a fascinating glimpse at how the women’s game itself is changing in real time.

  • Pickleball Tip: What You Need to Know About Footwork Near the Kitchen
Season 25, Episode 4: Shaun Boyce and Jim Carella

Welcome to today’s tennis tips where Shaun invites RSPA and PPA certified pickleball pro Jim Carella (AKA Jimbo Pickleball). Today he’ll share the importance of footwork at the non-volley line, which is generally known as “Kitchen”. No matter if you're just a pickleball enthusiast or a seasoned pro, mastering this technique (that Jim shares today) will level up your game.

    What This Short Episode Exposes

The episode is short but enriched with some precious advice from Jim Carella that will help you dominate the court. Here are some of the key facts that the episodes is going to reveal-

The Importance of Footwork at the Kitchen Line

Today Jim explains why your footwork near the net is super crucial. It will allow you to be aggressive and defensive at the same time. This approach will enable you to stay balanced and improve your ability to determine the ball’s next move.

    Why Shuffling is Key

Jim highlights the significance of standing facing the net with your hips and shoulders at all times. This simply allows for better control and quicker reactions. He advises shuffling left and right aggressively to stay in a ready position, which allows for making defensive shots and strategic moves. Proper shuffling helps maintain one's balance while reacting to the fast-paced action of pickleball.

The Dangers of Crossing Your Feet

One of the most common mistakes many players make is crossing their feet with the intention of moving. Jim defines crossing your feet as a harmful habit as it causes instability, makes it difficult for your body to recover, and leaves you exposed to a "speed-up" shot from your opponent. It is clear that remaining forward with anticipation and preventing crossing legs enables more effortless movement to a ready position.

When to Use a Step-Cross (and How to Recover)

Although crossing your feet should always be avoided, Jim explains why it can sometimes be acceptable in certain situations. But if feet do get crossed, it is highly important to make a strong recovery and get to a neutral position as quickly as possible to be ready for the next sequence.

  • 10 Minutes of Tennis: AUS Open Opening Rounds and Justins Picks
Episode #4 Season 25: Shaun Boyce & Justin Yeo

Welcome to our another episode of 10 Minutes of Tennis! In this episode, host Shaun is joined by world-renowned tennis coach Justin Yeo to discuss the Australian Open, upcoming tennis stars, and what separates good players from great champions.

Today we’ll talk about the inspiring story of Destanee Aiava, the work behind her flabbergasting results, and how young players get motivated to get to the top. We also discuss the future of men’s and women’s tennis, the challenge of coaching, and the biggest names to watch this season.

If you’re a tennis lover, this isn’t an episode to miss! Hit that follow button, share this with your tennis buddies, and let’s get into it! 🎾

    About The Guest

Justin Yeo is a world renowned tennis coach from Australia currently residing in Puerto Rico. He has coached a lot of great players and really understands what it takes to make it in professional tennis.

Justin has worked with athletes ranging from rising youngsters to elite competitors. His experience and passion for the game make him the perfect person to help us break down what’s new in the tennis world. As always, today in this episode he’ll reveal something unique.

Key Discussion Points in the Conversation

Even though the 14-minute episode seems short, Shaun and Justin jampacked the episode by raising many intriguing points from different stories about different tennis players. Here are some of the key points you’ll get to know-

🔹 The Journey of Destanee Aiava

From picking up a racket at age five in Australia to competing at the highest level, Destanee is a rising star. She is also an inspiration for young athletes, especially within the Samoan and Islander communities, showing them that tennis is an option beyond traditional sports like rugby.

🔹 The Power of Inspiration in Tennis

Every top player has a moment that changed their life. Coco Gauff was once a little girl watching Venus Williams, and that moment inspired her to chase greatness. Andy Roddick had a similar experience as a young fan. These moments shape the future stars of the sport.

🔹 What It Really Takes to Be a Champion

Hard work beats talent. Taylor Fritz recently told a young fan that success comes down to wanting it, loving the game, and working hard every single day. Many players have talent, but only a few put in the work day in and day out.

🔹 The Unsung Heroes: Tennis Coaches

The best coaches spend years developing players without knowing who will make it. Justin reminds us that coaching is a numbers game—you train many players, and only a few make it to the top. But every step of the journey matters.

🔹 The Changing Face of Men’s Tennis

Stefanos Tsitsipas was once a top contender, but has he lost his edge? Andrey Rublev keeps falling short at Grand Slams. Meanwhile, a new wave of young players is rising fast. Who will dominate in the coming years?

🔹 Why Women’s Tennis is So Exciting Right Now

The WTA Tour is unpredictable. Big hitters can turn a match around in an instant. With so many strong competitors, picking a clear favorite is tough. But that makes every match more thrilling to watch!

    Intriguing Parts of the Episode

One of the best moments in this episode is Justin’s amazing story about Novak Djokovic.

Just imagine - Djokovic lands from a long flight, but instead of going to his hotel, he heads straight to the court. He doesn’t warm up slowly—his first rally goes for 118 shots! That kind of dedication is what makes him a champion.

Another incredible story is about Serena Williams. Her former coach once trained with her for 45 minutes using just one ball. These stories remind us that talent alone isn’t enough. The greatest players are the ones who put in the work every single day.
