    Following the Ways of God
    2 Chronicles 17-19
“His heart took delight in the ways of the Lord.” (17:6)

The northern kingdom of Israel with its headquarters in Samaria knew no godly kings until its destruction. The dates for that kingdom were 922 – 721 B.C. They had one sorry sinful king after another. Jehu was kind of good in that he did the will of God concerning the annihilation of the house of wicked Ahab and Jezebel (2Kings10). Although Israel did have some pretty good prophets (Elijah, Elisha, Jonah, Amos, and Hosea), they were not enough to stem the tide of wickedness carried on by the kings of the north, nor turn them from the sins of Jeroboam which made Israel to sin and was the reason it was destroyed.
The southern kingdom of Judah had a few godly kings (Asa, Jehoshaphat, Uzziah, Hezekiah, and Josiah) in a list of many bad ones, and it had several good prophets (Isaiah, Jeremiah, Micah, Malachi, and others). This kingdom lasted from 922 – 586 B.C.  Judah would typically go from two or three or more bad kings and then have a good one along the way, followed by another string of bad kings. God had mercy on Judah because of the promises made to David and Judah, and the house of God was there. The Messiah had to come from the line of David and He had to come to Jerusalem, “the city of the great king.” Jesus was born and died in Judah.
Jehoshaphat was one of the few good kings who was the son of a good king. Asa his father left him a legacy and an unfulfilled task of ridding Judah of all its idolatry and teaching the people the ways of the Lord. Jehoshaphat had momentum with him, as few kings in Judah and no king in Israel had.No righteous king ever completed the task of ridding all the high places, much like no king in Israel ever removed the golden calves, or they never eliminated all the Canaanites from the Promised Land. Some did better than others, but nobody ever completely cleaned house. The good kings never got the kingdom all the way back to the way it was under David, who was the standard for godliness and worship for the nations of Judah and Israel. But Jehoshaphat was one of the best kings at doing this. It says of him: “Now the Lord was with Jehoshaphat because he walked in the former ways of his father David; he did not seek the Baals (idols).” (17:3)… to read more click on the following link:

Rehoboam and Jeroboam - Service and Sacrifice
    First Kings 12-14

Israel’s fourth king is doomed to division and decline as depravity takes over the throne. Through the reigns of Saul, David and Solomon there has been mostly a unified monarchy; but everything changes with Rehoboam, the son of Solomon. As a judgment against Solomon’s apostasy, ten of the twelve tribes are torn away from the house of David and given to an exiled rebel from the North, a man called Jeroboam. Abraham Lincoln quoted Jesus when he said, “A house divided against itself cannot stand.” The same goes for a kingdom. Division was followed by depravity and decline; as one kingdom becomes two, both begin a downward spiral into destruction as they turn away from God. Only Judah will have an occasional good king.
From this point on there will be two kingdoms whose histories are recorded for us concurrently throughout the books of Kings and Chronicles, with Chronicles focusing on the Southern kingdom of Judah because it was the line of David, to whom God had made everlasting promises. You will see throughout the inspired Biblical record that the dates for each king is compared to the reign of the kings in the other kingdom. For example, “In the twentieth year of Jeroboam king of Israel, Asa became king over Judah.” (1Kings15:9) From now on there will be two kingdoms: Israel is the northern ten tribes and Judah is the southern two tribes of Judah and Benjamin (all of Judah and most of Benjamin).
Solomon turned from God in a big way. It appears that after Solomon’s blatant turn away from God in his later years he realized his error, repented and wrote the book of Ecclesiastes. He had learned his lesson. However, it did not take the consequences of his apostasy away. Even while Solomon lived God promised ten of the tribes to an industrious young man of valor named Jeroboam (11:26-40). Solomon heard of it and like King Saul before him sought to kill God’s appointed king; but Jeroboam fled to Egypt until Solomon died.
At Rehoboam’s inauguration Jeroboam and his northern people asked Rehoboam to ease the workload and taxes that Solomon had imposed on them. In a display of arrogance, he listened to his cronies and threatened to increase both. Listen to the words of the wise elders to him, “If you will be a servant to these people today, and serve them, speak good words to them, then they will be your servants forever.” (12:7) That was Rehoboam’s problem – he didn’t want to serve anybody; he wanted others to serve him. Therefore they left him and under Jeroboam’s leadership set up their own kingdom in the north. They would never again be one... to read more click on the following link:

Solomon and All of His Glory
“So King Solomon surpassed all the kings of the earth in riches and wisdom.”   (1Kings10:23)

While Solomon was not the greatest king ever (David has that honor), he was the richest king Israel ever had. Much of that was because of the spoils of war brought in by King David before Solomon ever ascended to the throne. Much of that ornate expensive temple that Solomon built was paid for and the material supplied by David. In a sense Solomon had everything handed to him; he was born with the golden spoon in his mouth.
But Solomon was a successful king and leader of God’s people. His reign was marked by complete and total success in wisdom, justice, riches, peace, and glory. Jesus referred to him this way: “Solomon in all his glory.” (Matthew 6:29)  He was the richest and wisest of all the kings of his day. Nobody else even came close. People traveled from all over the world to behold the glory of his wealth, works and wisdom.
Proverbs 13:20 says, “He who walks with wise men shall be wise,” and we learn much wisdom from this wisest of men; and nothing is more important than wisdom. We learn from Adam, Noah, Moses, Abraham, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, Joshua, Samuel, and David. Now we are about to learn from Mister Wisdom himself. Let us learn his lessons and be better Christians for it.
Our riches and wisdom, like Solomon’s, come from Christ, the Son of David. We inherit our wealth in spiritual riches from the Son of David by what He did for us in the gospel and by what He gave to us. Solomon’s wisdom came from God, through the hearing heart given to him in answer to prayer. So does ours. Christ is our wisdom and our glory is the cross of Christ by which He purchased all our inheritance... to read more click the following link...

SEEKING THE PRESENCE OF THE LORD

“The Lord was with Him.”  (1 Samuel 2:19)
“You will find Him if you seek Him with all your heart and with all your soul.”  (Deuteronomy 4:29)
I want us to look at the overwhelming blessing of the Lord being with us and what our responsibility is to have that happen. I am not talking about the omni-presence of the Lord here. All of God is everywhere at the same time. David said, “If I make my bed in Sheol (the realm of the dead), You are there.” You can’t go anywhere that God is not already there and has been there since the beginning of time. God can’t go anywhere because He is already everywhere. That is the doctrine of the omni-presence of God.
The presence of God we will look at here in the Bible is that special presence of God that shows up to bless and favor you. Of the scores of times “the Lord was with him” appears in the Bible it is always used as the cause of someone being blessed. We shall see that. It means the Lord is with you because He is for you. He is on your side and He helps you to withstand great trials and accomplish great achievements. That’s the presence of God we will be looking at in this study. His presence is better than a good luck charm. Someone gave me a rabbit’s foot once and I asked him what that was for. He said it’s for good luck. I told him it wasn’t that lucky for the rabbit. God is not a four-leaf clover or Lucky Charms. He is God and when He is with you, you are blessed.
Well, you might say, God says He will never leave us nor forsake us. That is true. He will never leave us, but we can leave Him. If God seems far from you right now, guess who moved? The Prodigal Son left his father; the father didn’t leave him. Jonah ran from the presence of God. People forsake God all the time. The harsh reality is that some people live their whole lives without the blessed presence of God in their lives. What a loss! We are going to look at the earthly and eternal blessings that come from the Lord being with us... http://www.gracehouseclinton.com/2020/12/seeking-the-presence-of-the-lord
