It is humbling to think back over our lives and reflect on others' decisions that benefitted our lives. It is even more sobering to acknowledge that there are some decisions in life that we must make ourselves. The psalmist in our text today made such a decision: I will sing a new song. Jesus made a decision to go willing to Calvary. That selfless act changed all of our lives forever, but we must also make a decision to take advantage of Jesus’ sacrifice. When we open our mouths to sing a new song, God brings order to the chaos. When David began to sing a new song, he renounced the past and embraced a new future. Verse nine of the 144th Psalm is a changing point; every Psalm after that verse is a song of praise and uplifting. When we change our focus and attitude, we change the course of our life. We cannot always change the events of our lives, but we can change the song we sing, and God will take that and see us through to a better outcome.

Exodus 12 is an essential part of the history of Israel. God’s people had been in bondage for over 400 years. Exodus 12 is the culmination of the plagues that God brought upon Egypt to free his people. Every phrase in these verses is packed with meaning and significance. In verse one, God tells them that the event about to happen would mark the beginning of their calendar. That marked the point of redemption. It would change how they would view the timeline of their lives. Drawing the parallel of Jesus being our Passover, we observe the same change in time at the cross, where Jesus’ death marks the man’s deliverance from sin.

Verse eleven describes how they were to eat the Lord’s Passover. There are three main instructions. The first is “with your loins girded” It referred to arranging their garment so that they would be prepared to work or to move. In modern parlance, they were told to roll up their sleeves to be ready to work. God told them to wear their shoes and to have their staff in their hands. This also indicates a readiness to work. God tells them to eat in haste. All of this was in preparation for the great event that God was about to bring. God wanted them to be ready to jump into action.
