Members Reviews:
This is a nice, basic introduction to birds and animal science for the young student!
Birds, as most people know, "are the only animals that have feathers." The feathers can help maintain the temperature of the bird. The bird will "fluff up" to keep warm or will flatten them down in order to cool itself. For water birds they have down underneath their body feathers. These feathers "overlap so water runs off them." Some birds have feathers that blend in so well with their environment you cannot spot them easily when they hide. Some birds like the peacock have "brightly colored feathers." Birds that fly have "flight feathers" and steer themselves with "tail feathers." Can you name a very interesting bird from Australia that is too bid to fly?
There are birds who frequently swim underwater like the penguin who flaps its "wings underwater to swim." All birds take care that they stay clean by preening their feathers often. In this book you can see different birds and what they eat. For example the heron eats fish, the woodpecker eats insects, the flamingo eats "tiny plants and animals," and "cardinals crack seeds with their thick beaks." You will also see how different birds build their nests, you'll learn that they lay eggs, how the babies grow in them, how the mother keeps her chicks warm once they hatch and you'll discover several other interesting things as you read.
This is a nice, basic introduction to birds and animal science for grades K-3, ages 5-7. The intent is help the young student become interested in animal science and a book like this can prove to be a nice stepping stone into learning how to write a report or can provide an interest in nonfiction. This would be a nice read and discussion book in the homeschool or classroom setting because it leaves a lot of room for questions. For example, when it's said "chicks cannot fly" and "their parents bring them food" the statements can lead to other more detailed books on a higher reading level. In the back of the book there is a "Find My Feet" game, an index, a glossary and additional recommended book and website resources.
