    My students love these books.
Jules deftly handles the social terrain of elementary school
Written by Jacqueline Jules and illustrated by Miguel Benítez, Freddie Ramos Stomps the Snow is the fifth of the Zapato Power books. This sweet, playful tale centers on the special experiences around a school snow day, as experienced by the protagonist of the series, Freddie Ramos. Freddie has super zapatos thanks to a special neighbor, who helps him transform his usual sneakers into super snowshoes to help his neighbors. What sets Freddie Ramos apart is how the story strikes a positive note while accurately reflecting the experiences of kids from a range of backgrounds.
The setting for Freddie Ramos opens up possibilities for subtly engaging with experiences that are relatively neglected in the sunny tales targeted at the primary grades. Despite the fact that many students live in apartments and know some financial hardships, the vast majority of books for children feature middle-class families living in single-family homes. It is refreshing, then, to follow the escapades of Freddie Ramos and his friends at the Starwood Park apartment community.
Financial concerns are a reality for Freddie and his friends, but Freddie Ramos also suggests that even young kids can take positive actions in response to difficult circumstances. Freddie worries about not having snow boots, and we learn that most of his shoes and clothes are hand-me-downs from a friendâs older brother. Importantly, Freddie frames this fact in a way that shows a focus on the positive in his community: âAt Starwood Park, people shared.â Attentiveness to the needs of others is prominent in the book, and later, we see how Freddie enacts generosity. In addition to his work cleaning paths for neighbors, when he notices that most of the kids donât have a sled, he proposes a strategy for sharing that allows all the kids in the complex to have a turn going down the big hill. The Starwood bully, Erika, appears in a more vulnerable light when her grandmotherâs purse is stolen with their rent money inside.
Yet these more serious elements do not weigh down the buoyant narrative. My son (age 4) loved the special zapatos and the watch that Freddie uses to turn them on. I enjoyed the casual, untranslated incorporation of Spanish. (For why I think itâs so important that books not gloss these phrases, see this post.)
Jacqueline Jules also deftly handles the social terrain of elementary school. Like many sweet kids, Freddie finds it easier to protect his friends from bullies than to help the bully herself. But his character stretches, ultimately rising to the challenge of being kind to an unlovable classmate. Readers see that Freddieâs greatest superpower is the generosity and kindness he has learned from his community.
    Kristi's Book Nook
Wouldnât it be cool to have a pair of shoes that let you zip around and do amazing things, just like a superhero? Freddie Ramos does know because he has Zapato Power.
Freddie is a very special kid. Mr. Vaslov, an inventor, knew it. He had given Freddie a very special pair of shoes to test.

Fun way to learn about the planets!
I just finished reading Evan Copper Planet Hopper! This is an engaging book that will not only hold my children's interest but they will be learning about the individual planets!
Evan and his Dad are given a spaceship from their alien friend Zebo. Evan plans to visit each planet. He decided to visit Mercury first since it's the farthest from the Sun.
While reading the book Evan teaches about Mercury and gives interesting facts at the end of each chapter!
Let's see where Evan travels to next!
Great for students and teachers alike!
I just finished reading Evan Copper and I loved it! There were facts in it that I didn't even know (and I'm 35). I think this book would be an awesome supplement to a teacher's Solar System curriculum!
I could see a teacher reading it to the class and having them draw what they think the spaceship looks like, show their interpretations of what they think Mercury looks like, even asking the kids what items they would personally bring with them on this kind of trip. So many endless possibilities!
Early introduction into astronomy - a space adventure
A fun way of introducing astronomy to children with simple concepts. There is a small touch of "educational" with "Remember this!" at the end of each chapter. But all in all a good way to bring the facts of astronomy to children and hopefully make them want to know more about it.
I loved that Evan travelled with his father, but hope that next time he will take a girl or his mother. Adventures are for both, boys and girls.
    Looking forward to more!
I read this book with my kiddos and they loved it. Being a fan of the Magic Treehouse series, I love that this one combines education and story. My kids thought it was great and my oldest thought it was funny how much her dad and Evan's dad are alike.
    We're looking forward to more!
    Awesome book!
I received an Advance Review Copy of Evan Copper Planet Hopper - Journey to Mercury in exchange for an honest review.
My 7 year old son and I read this book together and we both enjoyed it tremendously. He is very keen on learning while having fun so this was absolutely perfect as the story is not just a fun one, it also contains tidbits of information at the end of each chapter.
Justin, my son and I can't wait to read more of your books!

    AWESOME HOMESCHOOL BOOKS!
We love all the Brian Cleary books for our homeschool library but they are good for any child whether homeschooled or not. They are simple and fun to read and help to really enforce these concepts and make them easy to understand and comprehend. My kids adore them.
I wish they would sell them in sets as you have to hunt down all the different ones. It would be great to find a paper back boxed set at a good price of all the grammar and one for the math too. I really don't know why the publishers haven't done this!
    Five Stars
    Gets you thinking.
    Five Stars
    I love this series!
This is a fun, exiting way to introduce a basic English grammar concept, the interjection ...
If you'd like to add a little excitement to English grammar and basic language art skills you need not look any further than Brian Cleary's CATegorical cats. A sharp and prissy CATegorical teacher aims her pointer at her easel which tells us that and interjection is "A word or phrase spoken suddenly and used to show emotion." The cats show you they can be found "in different parts of speech" like pronouns, adjectives, adverbs, and nouns. Of course some cats know all about interjections because they've studied, but some get wide-eyed with surprise. "These words are little signs to show / When meaning should be stressed. / Like `oh my gosh! I didn't know / today we've got a test!'"
You'll learn the they can "help us to express our pain or joy" or add a little zip-a-dee-doo-dah to our language. Zap! Pow! Pop! They can draw attention to a situation, can be used to express grief, or are "useful when you want to show amazement, awe, or shock." Those little words like oh, um, and ah can be very expressive interjections. "Oh! Can show surprise or pain / and works as well with pleading / Like, `Oh! Oh! Oh! Please call on me. / I'd love to do this reading.'" The CATegorical cats will guide you through this book with lots of pizzazz and without a doubt you'll certainly know what an interjection is by the time the last page is turned. Wow!
This is a fun, exiting way to introduce a basic English grammar concept, the interjection. If you haven't met any of the CATegorical cats before, you simply don't know what you are missing. This is one in series, "Words Are CATegorical" books that give a lot of spice to the standard grammar lesson. The wild and sometimes crazy cats dance their way through these pages right along with a very unique rhyming scheme that introduces each concept. The interjections are highlighted in color for easy identification in the sentences they are included in. The lively and somewhat zany, colorful artwork meshes perfectly with each "lesson" or concept that Cleary is trying to get across.
