Imaginative Fairy Tale Retelling

This fairy tale retelling tells the story of the magical golden harp in Jack and the Beanstalk. Clarion is the daughter of a pig farmer, one of a trio of friends, and a harpist that can capture listeners' hearts. After her father's death, her mother resorts to selling all of their possessions, including Clarion's beloved harp. While playing her harp for the last time at the Mayor's ball, Clarion and a visiting lord's son discover a giant beanstalk growing in a witch's garden and the adventure begins!

I love fairy tale retellings, and I've never read a Jack and the Beanstalk story before. The author created an interesting world and characters. I liked that the sexuality of the characters was presented as matter of fact without labels. I actually preferred Elena to the main character, and sympathized with her when she realized that Clarion had feelings for a man, and she was alone.

The plot was interesting, but every new reveal had to be explained to Clarion in detail, so every twist consisted of another character telling Clarion, 'No, THIS is why that happened'. Clarion asked all the right questions, but instead of being addressed, they were ignored. I'd love to hear more about why the little people didn't know about the giants, and where Jacosa's magic came from.

The narrator read dramatically and with feeling. Instead of reciting songs, she sang them, and it was really well done. I was provided a copy of the audiobook, and I'm voluntarily leaving a review.

A fun LBGTQ friendly fracture fairytale

Clarion is our quiet, determined hero of this story. Shes on the cusp of adulthood and this adventure will catapult her into life with several decisive actions. I really liked her character. Shes had a pretty stable if downward spiraling life up until recently. She and her mom are facing poverty. With her dad deceased, its up to her and her mom to make ends meet.

Action and Suspense

Two sisters Rowan and Nora are attempting to find their classmates who have disappeared. They are facing a real mystery. There is lots of action and suspense and surprises at the end. The narrator did a great job changing voices.

A delightful story

it is probably best to start by saying this book was probably not for me. But I listened to it to the end and am glad I did. the payouts were awesome!

While I think the narratir did a good job, and much better than I ecet could, there was one thing that bothered me. she paced her naration a bit slow and slowed it down more so for certain characters and while ai understand why she did, it still didnt work for me. I listened to most of the book at 2x the speed to overcome this.

I do recomend this book for those who it was intended for and I will be checking out the next one.

Story drags on, too slowly

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Faster narration, for starters. The narration is so slow in this book that I had to listen to this book at 1.7x speed. And even then, the story seemed to go on and on and on and I was bored to death.

I feel like there wasn't enough content to make it as large a book as it is. There are quite a few repetitive elements.

The PoV jump from person to person in every chapter makes it worse. Right when I'm starting to understand and connect with a character, a different character's PoV starts and I'm thrown off balance. This happens throughout the book.

All in all, the book needs better editing to trim unnecessary parts, better organization of the story flow and faster narration.

To say I was enlightened by this book, is an understatement. Michael Becker is an amazing person on so many levels. The details he shares about his career illuminate his intuitive, entrepreneurial spirit. Against the backdrop of his courageous battle with cancer, a story emerges about a man who defied odds and is still fighting the good fight. Is his writing style perfect, without any editing errors? No, but it is honest and brave. Writing a memoir was on his bucket list, and, along with his other accomplishments, he has succeeded in adding yet another achievement to his life and legacy. All of us hope our lives had purpose, that we mattered, and the title of this book couldn't be more perfect. His life had purpose, his life mattered, and he gave his family and friends a gift by writing this book. Thank you Michael D. Becker!

A courageous and inspiring book! Michael Becker speaks with a bracing directness about his career as a biotech executive, about his family and his business relationships and about his unexpected battle with cancer. Having known him through business dealings I see in this book the whole picture of the man. The book's lessons will surely resonate with a broader group of readers beyond just those who know him.Thank you Michael for writing this book. It's a great read.

Great reading

I found Michaelâs story both inspirational and educationalâand very easy to read without too much technical overload.Don't let the 480+ pages scare you away. It shows me that an individual with self-motivation can accomplish almost anything. It also can help friends and family understand what a cancer patient is going through. Contrary to one review, I found the story extremely well written â and I am a college graduate.

I do not recommend it at all

If I could, I would give this book 1/2 star. I do not recommend it at all. The writing and editing are poor. It's filled with run-on sentences and grammatical errors.

Also, I believe one of our parental responsibilities is to protect our children. Michael clearly did not do this by exposing his daughter's unresolved mental illness. Talking about mental health is important, but I feel that he exposed too much personal information.

It seems that he has more negative things to say about the people involved in his life's journey. That's sad and I wonder how much of it is true or just his subjective view.

I am very sorry for his diagnosis and wish him and his family the best.

So Impressed by this man I have had the pleasure to meet!

Michael is a solid individual with great character! What I appreciate so much about him in his journey with cancer is his ability to be so transparent in his fears, hopes, & dreams for he & his family. I read the book twice as I enjoyed learning about his love for biotech when it was not as widely followed as it is now.

Good, if a little stunted

I enjoyed this book quite a bit. It was fun, quick, action-packed, and romantic. The only drawbacks for me are that the beginning felt a little forced (though believable considering Baldair's proclivity for skirt-chasing) and some of their interactions felt a bit scripted. The ending was great and breathtaking even though this was a prequel. Knowing certain characters survive because they appear in Air Awakens did not rob the story of its drama, it jus morphed it from "Are they going to get through this?" to "How will they get through this?" Good book. Enjoyed it. Just didn't love it.

Loved getting to know Raylynn!

I enjoyed this latest installment in the Golden Guard series and the further development of Baldair's character and, of course, the first real introduction we have to Raylynn's character. I thought it was well woven into the rest of the GG series as well as the Air Awakens series and (as a fan of both) I finished it in a day (I had to work or it would have been faster...), so there you go.

I particularly enjoyed Baldair getting to know a secretive person like Raylynn and how this was a foil for Vhalla getting to know Aldrick and drawing comparisons between the two. I would have enjoyed knowing Raylynn's POV of some of the Air Awakens events now knowing her back story.

One caveat though (not taking off a star for this because this comment is for the editors, not the author): one uses "reins" for horses, not "reigns". That error popped up several times. Yikes!

Woohoot!!! Loved it!

Woohoot!!! This next installment in the Golden Guard prequel trilogy is even better than the first. In this one we get a glimpse of Baldair's relationship with Raylynn and what a great read it is.

I loved how Elise allows us to watch Baldair grow in a way different than the first book in this series. In that installment, Baldair is young and impulsive.

Interesting expansion to the series

Fairest - Levanaâs Story by Marissa Meyer is a prequel to her fairytale reimagining series The Lunar Chronicles. It provides the backstory to series antagonist Queen Levana Blackburn of Luna. If you are new to The Lunar Chronicles, PLEASE donât start with this book - go read Cinder, Scarlet and Cress and then come back to it. It will be more engaging in that way.

This book is a very focussed character study of Queen Levana and how she turned from a naive, self absorbed young girl into the tyrant our heroines are trying to depose. There is little in the way of worldbuilding or major plot development. It remains mostly confined to the Lunar Royal Palace.

What I liked

Character development. This is the focus of the book and is excellently done. We follow Levanaâs progression from a self absorbed, naive young girl to the vicious despot of the later books. I appreciated how each step and decision she took along that path was small and logical at the time but each developed her character as it turned out to be. I found her an interesting character, and at many points she gained my sympathy for what she went through.

Character cameos. Many of the characters from the later books made cameo appearances as their younger selves. Even if they werenât specifically named as such it was great fun to spot Cinder, Cress, Kai and other characters.

Audiobook narration. Once again narration is provided by Rebecca Soler who did the narration for the other books in the series. She does a brilliant job of capturing the charactersâ voices and I hope she continues for Winter, the final book in the series.

What I didnât like

Very expensive for such a short book. This book is really a novella - barely 272 pages or 6 hours and 36 minutes of audiobook - and yet is was priced comparatively expensively. I paid the price but a bit more resentfully than for other books.

No chapter breaks. The book is written in one long narrative unbroken into chapters. Now, I am a working woman and I donât have the luxury of settling down to long chunks of several hoursâ reading. For me, the chapter breaks are valuable to give me a good place to stop.

Not Whispersync for Voice compatible. In other words, the ebook and the audiobook didnât sync. Combined with the lack of chapter breaks, it made switching between ebook and audiobook a very frustrating experience.

I was not impressed

I thought the writing of the story was choppy it bounces around from one thing to another and it's hard to follow back-and-forth. Also the reading was terrible difficult to pay attention to, and often mispronounced words. I feel that the author should've used a professional professional reader. However the stories about the children and the author strength as a mother we're heartwarming

Great book but the narrator...

The descriptions of each individual progressing through fighter training was great. The narration made listening difficult though.

Fighter Pilot Insight

Where does Bogeys and Bandits rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?

This was a decent book, worth reading if the subject of military combat is your thing. The parts where characters actually developed and either flew or failed were great, but there was a lot of telling rather than revealing, so this book felt more informative than entertaining.

Interesting Story

Good story but in my personal opinion Thomas Block sucks as a narrator. He sounds like he slurs his words and loses interest in reading the story. The voiced he uses for certain characters are cringe-worthy. I did not enjoy this book because of this.

Excellent account of a year in Viet Nam

Very moving account of a young soldier's year in Vietnam and the bond of brotherhood that forms in combat. Thank you to all the men who served in Vietnam and to Glyn Haynie for telling the story of his time in Vietnam and the first platoon soldiers that served with him. I highly recommend this book.
