    Author: Sandy Bax
    Narrator: Sandy Bax
    Format: Abridged
Length: 8 hrs and 28 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 01-27-10

Ratings: 3 of 5 out of 1 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
In the bucolic state of Vermont, a mother-daughter relationship is about to change forever. The daughter, Sara, is getting married. And with two out of three husbands in attendance, Sandy feels herself on the brink of madness as she stumbles against long-ago forgotten faces, both friend and foe, each evoking a vivid memory. The recollections in Assorted Nuts: A Family Album will take you on a candid and unforgettable journey from the depths of an anxious childhood to the heights of emotional freedom, and will have you laughing, crying, and laughing again all the way. Sandy Bax frankly and cleverly relates how she battled cancer, alcoholism, the pain of divorce, and the serendipitous assignment of becoming caretaker for an aging mother slipping rapidly into dementia. Assorted Nuts is a survivor's tale and is delivered in the languages of hope and courage. A must read for every woman, as surely she will find herself in at least one of these intimate family snapshots.

    Excellent Read!
Review: I loved this book. Really. I cannot tell you enough how wonderful it was to read. Memoir narrative is a dying, underappreciated set of literary product in today's increasingly academic, garbage self-help, and endlessly storied market. Bax is an undiscovered, but shamelessly exposed writer who is genuinely expert at her craft. A tragedy in being a largely unreviewed novel at the time of this writing, without fluff I concretely state that Nuts was one of the best books I have had the pleasure of reviewing or reading in the past months.
What makes it so compelling for me is the blending of genuine and sentimental humor, and unbridled intimacy the reader feels as he reads the narrative. From the table of contents to the last paragraphs, humor is a subtlety of coping the author shares with the voyeur reading in a private room the tragedies and triumphs of a human being that leaves nothing hidden under a bushel.
Instantly I was sad for this woman. Although she appears to triumph out of the chards of life that so brutally yet lovingly are strewn across the pages, the psychologist in me cannot help but to notice a gentle remorse or perhaps sadness that is distilled throughout the insights--as if to say to the reader "I am sorry for taking so long to discover me, don't make the same mistake."
As you progress through the early life, marriages, and vices one cannot help but to feel the genuine spectrum of human pathos associated with the vagaries of lie, and without feeling the unending sadness and isolation to which we all at times must feel. However, masterfully Bax spins humor and subtle insight throughout without the hubris of calling herself the Socrates of the new millennium. 100% recommended.
On the writing style: Excellent writing and editing. Straight forward and unapologetic. You will probably not like this novel if you enjoy a barrier between reality and perception--this book is life full speed ahead.
On the Target Audience: sober minded who enjoy humor. Those who can relate to a checkered life, or those who appreciate those who have had a checkered life. I especially think women in their middle to later ages would find the read quite enjoyable.

    Title: High Points and Lows
Subtitle: Life, Faith and Figuring It All Out
    Author: Austin Carty
    Narrator: Austin Carty
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 3 hrs and 54 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 01-26-10
    Publisher: Oasis Audio
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 1 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
For readers who loved Blue Like Jazz, comes inspiration and advice from Survivor contestant and Christian speaker Austin Carty
Figuring out who you want to be in life is never easy. In High Points and Lows, Austin Carty traces his own stumbling journey toward adulthood and true faith, drawing on lessons from pop culture and Christianity. In these funny and moving essays that address questions on faith, goals, and vocation, Carty offers an uplifting message for religious and secular audiences alike.
By turns amusing and endearing, Carty's essays explore everything from misguided evangelicals who treat salvation as a cottage industry to the real danger of cheating in school-everyone will think you're brilliant and then you've got a real problem. Whether he is failing miserably at his first real job as a nightclub gofer, explaining how Saved by the Bell has ruined our youth, or struggling to come to terms with the death of a beloved friend, Carty demonstrates how finding the courage to be ourselves is the best way to forge a genuine connection with friends, family, and God.

Shatters the formula of many Christian books
This is a truly refreshing book, something for everyone, not just Christians. I have read it twice already. Do not let the "Religion" category turn you away if you're not religious, because it is still a great read! While going to a Christian high school, I was so swept up by the "popular" Christian books written by big name pastors/evangelists that put the weight of the world on your shoulders. Those stress radical obedience, gauged by the level of physical suffering (emotional does not count), over-seas missions (domestic missions do not count), and how many "unreached" people you save. Those authors are passionate, but formulaic, and they assume you should copy their lives exactly or else face the intense and easily capitalized fear of being lukewarm. Carty instantly shatters that formula in the first chapter, writing about his disillusionment with the standardized altar call (how many Christians can remember those from their teenage years?). It is both enraging and funny, because it confirms what we probably already suspected of altar calls anyway. Carty brings this seriousness and humor to the rest of his book by just talking about different moments of his life. Of course, some would say this book is too comfortable or not radical enough because it does not tell you to suffer a specific way or take up a prescribed cross and follow Jesus. However, if it removes the paralyzing fear of not living up to the standard of the elite, experienced pastors and evangelists of our day, then maybe it is actually quite powerful. Now I am just waiting for his next book like this
    Wonderful Read!
This book showed up in my life at the perfect time (years ago). It's amazing. I always keep a stash to give away and it's our go to gift for graduates.
One of the strongest "conversational" writers has delivered
Austin, either in person or on the page, is so effective as a communicator because he's so charmingly eloquent as much as he's a passionate and down-to-earth storyteller. Never has that been more clear than in High Points & Lows.

    Publisher's Summary:
"Rain evokes for me all the mysteries of God's presence (and seeming absences) on the landscape of my life."
Through personal stories, honest reflection, and original poetry written straight from her heart, Leslie Parrott shares her struggle to remain open to God's revelations even (or especially) during the demands and chaos of life.
    Members Reviews:
    Flooded
This was a light-read, and yet a very personal memoir at the same time. In brief, vignette-style chapters, Leslie Parrott explores a seemingly endless selection of metaphors of rain/water/weather. The only other Parrott book I had read was "Saving Your Marriage Before It Starts (Inspirio/Zondervan Miniature Editions)" - which I read in my pre-marriage counseling! This certainly wasn't as deep or as instructional as that, but it was a nice little collection of devotional-type pieces.
A book that points you to God's presence when you are in the middle of loss and grief....
This is a book about some very personal losses and grief in Leslie Parrott's life. She shares her personal pain and how she turned to God in that pain. I appreciate her vulnerability and her openness. She is humble and brave. I would absolutely recommend this book to anyone who is hurting or grieving.
    NOT a novel!
Obtained book because it was free. Sorry I didn't read a review beforehand, or I wouldn't have bothered. Am NOT interested in essays and/or musings about religion or religious beliefs. I read for fun, enjoyment...
    More evangelical brainwashing
The sudden profusion of evangelical free Kindle books on Amazon is indicative of an organized strategy to convert the masses. This is just another of those books, which despite the beautiful language and imagery, is strictly for those with a biblical bent. The author seeks to combine poetry and literature with introspective musings on her faith and daily life, but it remains nonetheless a transparent attempt to use kindle to diffuse christian ideology.

  • Learning My Name Audiobook by Pete Gall

    Title: Learning My Name
    Author: Pete Gall
    Narrator: Pete Gall
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 4 hrs and 11 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 01-11-10
    Publisher: Zondervan
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 1 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
Learning My Name is the harrowing chronicle of a fearful prodigal putting family relationships on the line as he learns to trust the love of both his dad and his heavenly Father for the sake of putting neurotic, addictive thinking to rest. This book is more than the author's story; it is the story of humanity's interaction with God.
    Members Reviews:
    What does God call you?
So what name do you think God calls you when He's talking to you? Is it "My Child" or "Beloved" or something in a similar vein? What about "asshole," "loser," or "hopeless?" Does the Creator of the universe look at you and think "Wow, what was I THINKING when I made this creature?"
Pete Gall's second offering takes a different track than "My Beautiful Idol," looking at the events that shaped Gall into who he is and what he believes about God. Despite this change in focus, "Learning My Name" is no less brutally honest than what Gall revealed in his first book. There is no corner too dark for Gall to shine the light of truth and honesty into, and in doing so he opens the door for his reader to shine that same light on our own lives.
I recommend this book to both Christians and seekers, but also to anyone who suffers from an addiction of some type or knows someone who does. Gall refers frequently to his battle with over-eating and the causes that led him into it, but this isn't just an "addiction" book. Instead, as the title suggests, Gall talks about how this addiction and the events of his childhood led him to believe certain things about himself, to believe the titles that friends and family gave him, and ultimately about finding out his true identity from the Lord Himself.
Light on theology but heavily laden with what a relationship with the Creator looks, sounds, tastes and feels like, I highly recommend "Learning My Name" to Christian and seeker alike. 5 stars!
    Story-in-progress
I liked Pete Gall's first book, the memoir entitled My Beautiful Idol enough to write and tell him so. His funny, messy journey from his job in the advertising industry to world-changer bound to set the world on fire to burned-out ex-superhero was well-written and honest. Gall is back with the next chapter of his story-in-progress: Learning My Name (Zondervan).
Story-in-progress most definitely captures the feel of this book. It does not have a neat resolution featuring the five alliterative steps he took to get fixed. Instead, Gall's quest for emotional, physical and spiritual health form the narrative of this extremely personal, confessional memoir. Gall is battling obesity, and he begins the journey toward wholeness as he faces down the why of his condition.
His father's introduction at the beginning of the book brought me to tears. It alone is worth the price of the book.
This was not an easy book to read. Part of me wanted to walk away from the book, to cover Gall somehow - the confessions are so intimate and his wounds so raw that I found myself worried for the very public way in which he is processing his pain in real time. The other part of me, however, felt welcomed into the naked mess of his story. I am broken, too.
Gall is not certain whether his story will have a happy ending. He hopes so, but that hope is not the Braveheart triumphalistic kind of hope that we tend to see in Christian books.

    Publisher's Summary:
As a child, Steve would often talk to Dee and Ann, the twin sisters he believed lived in his house. What his parents thought were imaginary friends instead turned out to be manifestations of the spirits of Depression and Anger that followed the McFaddens like members of the family.
God revealed to Steve that these spirits he thought loved him were actually bitter adversaries who wanted to consume him. Though Steve began to draw closer to God, the challenges of his life took their toll. Caring for a physically disabled mother and living with a physically distant father, experiencing feelings of rejection when he was sent to live with friends, and wrestling with the call of God on his life left this man broken and in need of grace.
Throughout Our Companions, Our Enemies, Steve interweaves the lessons he has learned throughout his battles with depression, anger, and rage, which led to equally challenging battles with alcohol, lust, and other addictions that lead to self-destruction. His patent honesty about his own failures and successes, his loves and losses, and his ultimate hope will resonate with anyone who needs to know that it is never too late to turn life around.
