Good evening and thank you so much for joining me. We gently peruse tonight the usual random clutch of literary treasures, and are joined not only by the usual suspects (Mr Katt, gulls, swifts and goldfinches), but also by Mrs Hedgehog who trotted, in a most ladylike way, though in the style peculiar to small, snouty, prickly mammals. Any suggestions as to her name?

A note: for all those who subscribe between now and November, I will post small packages to all to celebrate Christmas, Thanksgiving and the winter season. Let’s not dwell on winter any more, as we’re still in the heart of summer, but tuck the information under your hat and think about whether you would like to subscribe regularly. You don’t get anything for it in terms of extra content, as I’m not a fan of all that, but as current subscribers can attest, you get the odd package of random things and an awful lot of appreciation from me.

I’ve had a lovely message from one of my wonderful subscribers that I’ve asked permission to share here:Hi Gretel, I really enjoyed today’s (Tuesday) episode, especially the ambient noise 😊. I love hearing the birds, bells, traffic, etc, as a background. Your topic of “what’s the point?” really resonated with me because I’ve had to live my life with that mindset since I was about 20. It’s a long story, but I’ll just say that I never achieved success in any conventional sense and instead learned to find happiness and fulfillment in small ways. “Ambition “ and “goals “ haven’t been in my vocabulary for 50 years, but I don’t think I missed anything. I figure that if I don’t have a point in life, I’m a lot more cuddly!’

I think she makes such a good point: ‘I figure that if I don’t have a point in life, I’m a lot more cuddly’. I do think we need point, but it’s for us to reinvent it and renew it daily, perhaps. And not crucify ourselves when goalposts shift and change.

Good afternoon and all my very best wishes to you on this Tuesday towards the end of July 2025. How can it be? When I received my Regular Commission on passing out from Sandhurst in 1996, I noted with incredulity that the date I would have to retire as an army officer was May 2027. This date seemed ridiculously futuristic and I remember feeling ecstasy at having so many years ahead of me. And here we are, just two years away from 2027. Years of different jobs, getting married, having children, buying homes, losing my mum, Covid, sickness and health. It flashes by, one day at a time. The phrase ‘look after the pennies and the pounds will look after themselves’ is applicable to life: ‘look after the days and the years will look after themselves’. So let’s look after the days, understanding that a peaceful day today, when we are kind to people including ourselves, will lead to a happier, more content life. We don’t need to grandly strategise the years if we handle each day with courage, wisdom and grace.
