How setting traps can help you scale your business.
In building my business, one of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned was about the idea of setting traps for yourself. It came from a buddy of mine who set a trap for himself when he told his daughter that if he closed one deal a week, that’s 52 deals in a year, he would take her to Disney over Christmas.
And then one week, he missed and didn’t close a single deal that week. His daughter came up to him, as she did every Friday and asked if he closed a deal that week. The look on his daughter’s face when he said no was his trap to get his ass together. He closed two deals that day and continued to every week after, just to make sure he didn’t have to see his daughter’s look of disappointment.
They made it to Disney! And his story was one of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned.
So, what is a trap? Think of it as a next level of accountability, providing consequences and rewards for getting stuff done (or not).
I’m talking about feeling real accountability, where you have a consequence and a win to make things happen. It’s a deal (a trap) you make with yourself to keep you moving forwards towards your goals. Why? Because you cannot always rely on being motivated every single day.
