As residents of the South we have a host of experiences and pieces of culture that influence our lives as creators. Food is a huge part of such cultural experience and stars the show of our conversation this week in It Came From The South: Grits & Canvases.

The richness of our culture is enhanced by the different approaches we all have to the same things. Grits is a staple in Southern cooking and each person, family, community have their own ways of splashing their uniqueness onto the blank canvas that it is. The way we express ourselves as we create art has proven to have deep similarities to the way we express ourselves when we create food. Recipes or no recipes? Guild President Lara Kisielewska chats with Guild Member Sue Jenkins on the experience of running a long-term creative business.

Lara founded Optimum Design & Consulting in 1992 and has been a volunteer with the Guild almost as long. Sue Jenkins is a multi-talented visual artist, course instructor, and owner of Luckychair, started in 1997. These two leaders compare their similar experiences through the years as they connect as both graphic artists and business owners. They discuss getting their first client and firing their first client, as well as getting their names out in the world before social media. Rounding out the conversation are the challenges they faced pricing their work and the most significant lessons they learned along the way. Copyright is the base from which creators gain the power to prove ownership in the event that their work is stolen. The way to exercise that power and right lives in the legal system and hence, has resulted in cases on intellectual property winding up in court. Interestingly enough, the Supreme Court hasn’t seen many cases on IP until recently. All of 3 major cases made it to the Supreme Court in the last couple years, including a couple heavy-hitters like Google.
