Born, Camillo Borghese in Rome on September 17, 1550 into the Borghese family of Siena, a recently established aristocratic family. His father was a lawyer and Camillo was the oldest of seven sons and his mother was Flaminia Astalli, a Roman noblewoman.
Camillo studied jurisprudence at Perugia and Padua. Camillo received the Sacrament of Holy Orders on October 20, 1577 and created a cardinal on June 5, 1596 of Sant'Eusebio and became the Cardinal Vicar of Rome by Pope Clement VIII.
Pope Leo XI died in 1605 and the Conclave elected Borghese as a compromise candidate and over notable figures. Such as Caesar Baronius and Robert Bellarmine.
During his pontificate he canonised Charles Borromeo, a prominent counter preformationist on November 1, 1610. And Frances of Rome on May 29, 1608.
The pope financed the completion of St. Peter's basilica and improved the Vatican Library.
The pope died on January 28, 1621 of a stroke in Quirinal Palace and Pope Gregory XV succeeded him.
