Hail Satire! with Vic Shuttee

1999 - It's THE DAILY SHOW WEEKLY PODCAST, a rewatch hosted by Vic Shuttee (@VicShuttee) and Chandler Dean (@chandlerjdean)! He started from the bottom (MTV) and worked his way up (slightly, to Comedy Central) – but after too long Jon Stewart (Playing By Heart, Elmopalooza) made good and became the most trusted man in media. How did this happen? The Daily Show begins in earnest, a depository of frat boy humor and cheap laughs. But Stewart, along with a team of talented correspondents that includes future stars Stephen Colbert, Steve Carell, Beth Littleford and Lewis Black, blazed a trail many would follow. Two aspiring comedians follow them down the rabbit hole and trace this satirical mainstay's entire first year – and podcast along the way. This is a moment of reflection for 160 episodes of THE DAILY SHOW WITH JON STEWART. Features an overview of the show's format, a month at a glance featuring highlights, lowlights, historical moments and the truly bizarre. Part 1 of 2. Conversation #160, recorded on July 25th 2017. Susan Silver is a veteran sitcom writer, known for penning early episodes of THE MARY TYLER MOORE SHOW, THE BOB NEWHART SHOW, PARTRIDGE FAMILY, SQUARE PEGS, LOVE AMERICAN STYLE and the pilot episode of MAUDE. In her new tell-all memoir HOT PANTS IN HOLLYWOOD: SEX, SECRETS AND SITCOMS, she reveals amazing run-ins with comedy legends Lenny Bruce, Mort Sahl, Mel Brooks, Bill Cosby, Don Rickles, Joan Rivers, Buddy Hackett, Dick Van Dyke and Presidents Nixon and Clinton. We talk Trump on SNL, the revolution of satirists (Jon Oliver, Stephen Colbert, Samantha Bee, among others) and the great funny females at the height of their powers. JULY 20, 2017 - It's THE DAILY SHOW WEEKLY PODCAST, a rewatch hosted by Vic Shuttee (@VicShuttee) and Chandler Dean (@chandlerjdean)! Yes, this is ridiculous. But after a full year of intense satirical news coverage, the boys needs break – or perhaps, a vacation. Travel with us back in time and to the left as we wind up at Radio City Music hall for a very Jon Stewart hosted Sesame Street spectacular, ELMOPALOOZA! We've got special guests (Chris Rock! Rosie O'Donnell! The Belz!), musical mania (Jimmy Buffet and Gloria Estafan?!) and a star-making performance by would-be Daily Show host David Alan Grier. As a treat to you, we hope you enjoy this absolutely bonker bonus episode, because we both busted our cummerbunds – and we're going back for more. JULY 19, 2017 - It's THE DAILY SHOW WEEKLY PODCAST, a rewatch hosted by Vic Shuttee (@VicShuttee) and Chandler Dean (@chandlerjdean)! After 41 weeks and 160 episodes, Jon Stewart's first year on the job is coming to a close, just in time with the end of the universe and such (Y2K's coming, people). So, these final two episodes are treated like a final exams – does Jonny pass, or (god forbid) are we gonna have to do this whole year again? There's intrigue: as a potential plagiarism scandal unfold with Nancy Walls' second segment "Turkish Delight." There's also some good old fashion awkward interviews afoot, with not-so-professional-impressionist David Boreanaz and the frequently mocked 'poet snoreate' Jewel. And, of course, to remind you that we've learned nothing: we've got Monkeys Humping. That's a rap on '99 folks – see you in the next millennium! JULY 16, 2017 - It's THE DAILY SHOW WEEKLY PODCAST, a rewatch hosted by Vic Shuttee (@VicShuttee) and Chandler Dean (@chandlerjdean)! As the year wraps up, Jonny Stew and company are still delivering those sweet, sweet goods – Comedy's Saint George Carlin pops by to teach us a new word, actress Shannen Doherty "blesses" the show with her ahem… womanly sounds, and Steve Carell cements his early Daily Show legacy with potentially the segment of the year: the McCain Tour Bus. All straight talk, no filler – this show is starting to really hit its stride! JULY 15, 2017 - It's THE DAILY SHOW WEEKLY PODCAST, a rewatch hosted by Vic Shuttee (@VicShuttee) and Chandler Dean (@chandlerjdean)! In a tumultuous first season of Jon Stewart's Daily Show, there have been high highs and low lows. After Rich Brown's reign of terror, it seemed pretty clear that the gang was content to spin wheels until the new millennium, offering up clip shows, sequels and garbage ala cart. Then out of nowhere: an amazing week of moments like this. We've got interviews with John McCain in the spin room, Steve Carell fighting with George Stephanopoulos, Paul Rudd in full Jon Stewart Show regalia, the debut of correspondent Nancy Walls, and Jon finding his unknown talent to hold a normal conversation for longer than 4 minutes with the watershed two-parter with Senator Bob Dole! Also, Rob Schneider shows up. Eh, what are you gonna do? Still, perhaps the best week of TDS yet? Only time will tell if Just Barely Television is an era of hope or disappointment. JULY 6, 2017 - It's THE DAILY SHOW WEEKLY PODCAST, a rewatch hosted by Vic Shuttee (@VicShuttee) and Chandler Dean (@chandlerjdean)! God Bless Steve Forbes! The Daily Show lands it's very first political interview as Indecision 2000 revs up, Frank DeCaro goes full bond villain, and Jon trounces his would-be enemy Michael Boatman in a game of Celebrity Jeopardy! The Goo Goo Dolls, Stephen Rea, and Laura San Giacomo guest, and Mo's cat is named Kooky. JULY 5, 2017 - It's THE DAILY SHOW WEEKLY PODCAST, a rewatch hosted by Vic Shuttee (@VicShuttee) and Chandler Dean (@chandlerjdean)! Twere the tweets heard round the world, Trump body slammed CNN, then mocked Morning Joe's Mika. But lo, as the decaying era of Titty and Weed comes crashing down to begat something new, something slightly less angry Libertarian – we see the birth of something closer to JUST BARELY TELEVISION. There's plenty of awkward to go around this week from Vance in drag, Tori Amos going full 51/50 on Jon and Steve Carell sees first hand the terror of the bloody Civil War… reenactments. Lennox Lewis bailed on the program, but Christina Ricci, Yasmine Bleeth, and Bill Maher show up and Jon endorses a candidate for the 2000 election! It is probably not who you'd think. JUNE 26, 2017 - It's THE DAILY SHOW WEEKLY PODCAST, a rewatch hosted by Vic Shuttee (@VicShuttee) and Chandler Dean (@chandlerjdean)! The Drought of Importance continues, but with brighter flecks on the horizon! Whispers of '90s staples keep the boys alert – Seinfeld, Pikachu, Kathy Griffin. And there's also an illogical number of spooky items for two weeks past Halloween, from a Dog on Fire/X-Files theme mash-up, to a very Steve Carell séance…thar be ghosts about! Kellie Martin also guest, and we pour one out for our departed, Mr. Paul Michael Mercurio.
