How colitis related hair loss led to a career in wigs 

Hediye Garcia has a background in hair, and was on the path to studying to be an educator when she began to experience hair loss.

She was simultaneously suffering from Alopecia Areata and Telogen Effluvium, which she originally put down to stress, but further investigation showed deficiencies in folic acid and iron.
Hediye was puzzled as to how she could have become anaemic when she follows a very healthy Mediterranean style diet, and after tests she was told she had colitis, which meant her body wasn't absorbing nutrients from food effectively.

She describes her hair loss, along with her diagnosis of colitis very mentally challenging, and she had to try to put her condition into perspective and focus on being grateful, not letting it consume her days.

This all led her to begin to take an interest in wigs and hair systems, and she even made her own wig!

She now offers hair extensions, wigs & toppers in Ashford, Kent. She shares her knowledge and information.

How can blood tests be used in hair loss diagnosis?

Tolu Blooms, the fine hair coach is a trichologist and has a salon in  Lagos, Nigeria, where she takes a holistic approach to hair.

She explains how 'protective' hairstyles that may be popular can be detrimental to hair health and shares her philosophy that hairstyles should never be painful!

Tolu invited a Trichologist into her salon to train her staff, and this was what sparked her curiosity to study the science of the hair & scalp herself.

We discuss when and why you may need to get blood tests taken, and how to use and interpret the results to aid in diagnosis and formulating a treatment plan, after Tolu shares her own recent experience of discovering she had an iron deficiency.

Tolu explains that prompt action is key with the statement 'time is follicles'!

Would you employ an ex offender? ~ How hairdressing changes lives

Diane, a Hairdresser & Lecturer, works in HMP SEND in Guildford.
She delivers the Hairdressing NVQ levels 1-3 in partnership with Milton Keynes College. 
After training to become an educator so that she could give something back to the industry, she now has an extremely rewarding job role where she can literally help to change someone's future.

We look at how the programme is so valuable within the prison, and how engaged & committed the prisoners are, appreciating the value of what they are learning. Diane shares some of her former students' successes to prove how effective this opportunity can be.

Diane describes the procedures of the prison, and how she feels very safe teaching there, with a very diverse range of students and clients.

She also highlights how the hairdressing industry has a lower than average hiring rate of ex- offenders, and how they could prove to be a real asset to an employer, and deserve a second chance.

Can menopause cause hair loss?

Tina Edwin, is married 51 year old Mum of two, lives in Kent. She is a marketing manager for Capital Space, with 9 Business Centres across Kent, Essex, Croydon & Milton Keynes.

She shares her story of how after symptoms of perimenopause began at age 44, she began to experience problems with her hair.

She first noticed a small bald spot on her crown that her husband pointed out, and the hair loss began to get worse. She went to the GP who diagnosed her with Alopecia Areata. She asked for a hospital referral and was told that they would not consider this until she had lost over 50% of her hair!

After this, Tina had to seek her own solutions for help, trying different options, including researching HRT, which she claims had a noticeable improvement on her hair loss.

Tina says that her alopecia made her feel embarrassed and ashamed, and shares her story in the hope that others ay find it helpful.

Since experiencing her hair loss, she has made many changes to her lifestyle, including probiotics, supplements, meditation and exercise.

Making the move to study Trichology ~ a route to career advancement

Helen Miller is 46, and has been in the hairdressing industry for 30 years. For the last 7 years she has been a mobile hairdresser.
After taking a course with the Cancer haircare charity and learning how to take care of clients with cancer, this sparked her interest to gain more knowledge in order to better help her clients.

Her lack of knowledge around the hair & scalp functions and conditions has motivated her to begin studying trichology, and she says the more she learns, the more she wants to learn!

We look at how going back to basics and educating clients on caring for their hair has improved her consultations, and as her knowledge has grown so has her confidence, which she finds empowering.

Helen shares her experience of choosing the right course, and going back into study after a long period of working.
