FINDING ACCURATE INFORMATION AROUND HAIR LOSS

This week I am joined by the Education manager from the Institute of Trichology in London.

Sara shares the latest on hair loss education practices, and where and how to find accurate information, such as where and how to refer clients who are experiencing hair and scalp issues.

We look at support from other professionals such as GP's, and how difficult it is to find the facts on hair loss solutions, when there is so much conflicting information in advertising and the media.

We also explore career pathways within hairdressing and trichology.

HAIR LOSS EDUCATION

Krysia West established the Postiche Academy in 2020, after experiencing hair loss herself, she is passionate about hair and hair loss, and wanted to provide hair loss training for other stylists and hair professionals.

She recognised that there was little training for hairdressers and barbers on how to consult with clients on hair loss, and, after studying trichology, she wanted others to become an asset to their workplace by developing knowledge in this area.

As more and more clients are coming into the salon with hair loss and scalp problems, early recognition and referral could lead to prevention and will definitely give the best possible outcome for anyone experiencing hair loss.

We discuss a holistic approach to hairdressing, being able to care for and nurture our clients and who to collaborate with to build a network of professionals for support and guidance.

WHERE DOES YOUR HAIR COME FROM?

Melanie Kirk from Arkitect Hair extension academy shares her incredible knowledge on hair extensions and where the hair comes from.

Melanie is in her own words totally obsessed with all things hair and hair extensions!
Having experienced hair loss herself, and working in the hair extensions business, she is passionate about ensuring that the hair she uses has been donated freely, going so far as to even visiting the source directly to ensure that there was a fair gain for the donors.
She is spreading awareness of the dark side of the industry, and explains the importance of ensuring that hair is not being collected in an unsustainable or immoral way.

Hair extensions are a $56.7 billion industry, and we have a responsibility as the consumer to support ethical trade practices- there are over 20,000 donations a day in India alone.
we discuss some of the more unregulated areas of the hair we are buying, such as the country of origin, and correct labelling and descriptions.

Todays episode will have you reflecting on the impact that consumerism can have around the world.

She also explains how there are 37 different types of hair extension methods, and how to ensure you are learning the correct methods for your business and target demographic.

Melanie also talks about how she can support your business, including aftercare following attendance of a course and how important this is.

Heather Greene talks about taking a more holistic approach to hairdressing, after finding that using hair products all day caused sensitivity to her skin and hands, and she started to explore making a switch to more natural brands.

LIONS BARBER COLLECTIVE 

In 2014, Tom Chapman lost a friend to suicide.
 
In 2015, He founded the Lions Barber Collective.

The charity was set up in a bid to help the prevention of suicide.
His aim was to create a safe space to provide a vital source of mental health support facilitated by barbers across the country.
Barbers are trained to recognise signs and symptoms of mental health, and know what to do if someone opens up to them.

We talk about the importance of listening and talking to someone, and how to know when and where to refer clients for help.

Tom is passionate that clients be regarded holistically; they are not just marketing tools, and their wellbeing is important.

Tom shares his own experiences and we discuss how much of a barber's or hairdresser's role is already that of a therapist, that 'Familiar stranger' that we share so much with, including our thoughts, feelings and who we go through all our major life events with.

He hopes to create an offloading service for hairdressers, barbers and therapists where they can talk through any problems or worries they have and unload from a tough workday.

FAKE IT 'TIL YOU MAKE IT

Beth Finlay shares her story; after contracting glandular fever, she started to experience alopecia areata and has lived with fluctuating hair loss ever since.

She talks about looking in the mirror feeling ugly, not liking what she saw and describes this as one of the hardest things to overcome.
But with gradual acceptance came resilience, and as she started to take back control, she began to help others by talking about her experience.
She now runs a social media agency, and has built a community on instagram @itsnotjusthair_

We also explore the need to care for and protect your scalp and Beth was involved in Monpure's recent campaign and now works closely with the brand, promoting the products for hair and scalp care.

Catherine specialises in counselling for hair loss, and we look at the psychological impact alopecia can have.

Living with alopecia herself, she can offer a unique insight into the grieving process for hair loss, and how to recognise unhelpful patterns, along with dealing with unpredictable or unstable hair loss patterns.

We discuss the stresses of returning to a normal life after lockdown and how you may underestimate your own ability to handle stressful situations.
