今回は、記念すべき第100回として、BTSの「Dynamite」を取り上げます。
2020年8月に発表された「Dynamite」は、1970年代のディスコやファンクを思わせる、明るく軽快なポップナンバーです。
BTS名義として初めて、最初から最後まで英語で歌われたこの曲は、Billboard Hot 100で初登場1位を記録。BTSを、それまでK-POPを聴いていなかった人や、英語圏のラジオリスナーにまで広く届ける、大きな転機となりました。
けれど、この曲が生まれた背景にあったのは、華やかな成功ではありません。
2020年、新型コロナウイルスの影響によって、BTSが予定していたワールドツアーは中止や延期を余儀なくされました。ファンと直接会うことができず、メンバー自身も落ち込みや無力感を抱えていた時期。
そんななかで「Dynamite」は、深刻な現実を正面から歌うのではなく、聴いている数分間だけでも不安を忘れ、明るいエネルギーを感じてもらうために生まれました。
朝起きて、靴を履き、牛乳を飲み、音楽に合わせて街へ出る。
歌詞には複雑な物語や深刻なメッセージはありません。キングコング、ローリング・ストーンズ、レブロン・ジェームズなど、ポップカルチャーを思わせる言葉がリズミカルに並びます。

For this milestone 100th episode, we’re taking a closer look at BTS’s “Dynamite.”
Released in August 2020, “Dynamite” is a bright, upbeat pop track inspired by the sounds of 1970s disco and funk.
As BTS’s first song performed entirely in English, it debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. It became a major turning point, introducing BTS to even wider audiences, including people who had never listened to K-pop before and radio listeners across the English-speaking world.
However, the song was not born out of a period of glamorous success.
In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic forced BTS to cancel or postpone their planned world tour. Unable to meet their fans in person, the members themselves experienced feelings of disappointment, uncertainty, and helplessness.
