On this episode, Seema and Dinesh have special guest, Dr. Jyothsna S. Bhat, who is a Clinical Psychologist and certified mindfulness-trained professional. She’s on the podcast sharing her experience as a Clinical Psychologist, particularly in the South Asian community. She’s sharing the common patterns she sees within the community and how we can create a more helpful narrative moving forward. They discuss the impacts of childhood to adulthood and parenting, and the importance of healthy relationship dynamics (and what that actually looks like). Dr. Jyothsna S. Bhat is a Clinical Psychologist and certified mindfulness-trained professional with PsyPACT certification, specializing in individual, couples and family therapy, and maintains a full-time private in PA and NJ. Among her areas of expertise are depression, anxiety, ADHD, marital stress, grief/loss, adjustment/mild traumas, and corporate stress. She has also conducted corporate wellness programming for such companies as Fragomen, Yieldstreet, and Deloitte. Dr. Bhat is an avid advocate for mental health in the South Asian community and hosts the first ever South Asian blog on Psychology Today. As a leading voice for Southasian mental health, Dr. Bhat has been interviewed by Refinery 29, The Juggernaut, Harvard Political Review, Forbes Inc, NBC online, Diversity Inc, among other high-ranking journals. Given her passion for advocacy, Dr. Bhat has had the privilege to speak on several panels, including Yahoo, Disney, and Double Verify, across the country to help increase mental health awareness in South Asian communities. She has also appeared on such podcasts as Untether Your Life and Immigrantly Pod.

In this episode, Seema and Dinesh welcome special guest Dr. Romit Bhattacharya to have the necessary conversation around the underrepresentation of South Asians in healthcare and research. He’s breaking down why South Asians are historically underrepresented and why that’s so harmful. Dr. Bhattacharya shares more on his mission and why it’s so important to him to create the largest database of South Asians. 

Dr. Romit Bhattacharya is a general and preventive cardiologist at the Massachusetts General Hospital, an Instructor in Medicine at Harvard Medical School, an associated scientist at the Broad Institute of Harvard and MIT, the Associate Director of the Cardiac Lifestyle Program at the Massachusetts General Hospital, and the Medical Director of the newly launched OurHealth Study - to study the lifestyle and genetic causes of cardiovascular disease among South Asians in the United States.

Dr. Bhattacharya's research focuses on comprehensive cardiometabolic risk profiling using a combination of genomic risk and lifestyle risk factors. He also studies novel digital technologies as tools to characterize lifestyle behaviors and to help patients manage disease and health promoting behaviors at home.
