Rebuilding the Walls

Nehemiah 8

After years of rebuilding efforts in Jerusalem including the temple and the city walls, the people were finally able to settle into life in the promised land again. But before they got too settled, Nehemiah and Ezra, along with other leaders, purposefully directed God’s people to His Word. God’s Word brought about a renewal for the people then and can bring about renewal for us now.

This week we continue our mini-series called "A Kingdom in Repair" which will wrap up our study of the Old Testament. This Sunday we shift our focus to the people remaining dispersed throughout the Persian Empire. In the capital city of Susa, God uses two Jews, Mordecai and Esther to save the Jewish people from total destruction. We will remember how God's sovereign plan unfolds through difficult and unlikely circumstances through the faithfulness of his people.

The Return Home

Ezra 1 and Haggai 1

God wants to be the center of our lives, and God desires that we ground our lives in Him. This is why the first project for the Jewish people as they returned from exile was to rebuild the temple…the sign of God’s dwelling on earth. However, the minute we embrace the centrality of God in our lives, Satan steps in to try to move off the sure footing of Christ. The good news is that this is one fight God doesn’t want to lose for His sake and for ours.

Priorities

Haggai 1: 1-15

This week we continue our journey through the narrative of scripture using "The Story" and begin a new mini-series called "A Kingdom in Repair" that will wrap up our study of the Old Testament. This Sunday we remember when the people of God began to return to Jerusalem under the decree of Cyrus, King of Persia. One of their first tasks was to rebuild the Temple which was destroyed almost 50 years earlier, but their focus soon shifted to rebuilding their own lives in the land. The Lord then sends the prophet Haggai to call the people back to get their priorities in order. This raises good and challenging questions about our own priorities and use of time. Come and join us as we wrestle with these questions!

Repent – Renew - Repeat

Ezra 1:1–4; 4:1–5; Haggai 1:1-9

God’s people return from Babylon to the challenge of rebuilding, only to discover that this will be a process – a long process! – with starts and stops. The One who carried them off, has now carried them back and will now lead them on a journey of renewal.
