The Prophets

Amos 5:1-2, 4-6, 14-15

This week we continue our journey through the narrative of scripture using "the Story." We carry on in our mini-series we are calling "A Kingdom Torn in Two" that covers the time of the divided Kingdom of Israel that eventually leads to exile. This Sunday we consider 1 Kings 17 - 2 Kings 8 and focus our attention on the role of God's messengers, the Prophets. We will look at the words of the prophet Amos to help us consider the role and message of the Prophets through the life of Elijah. This conversation begs the question - does God still speak to his people today??

God's Messengers

Hosea 11:1-11

One of the key ways that God communicated with the people of Israel and Judah was through the prophets, God’s messengers. The prophets often revealed the heart of God, the hearts of the people, and the hope of God. While this is true, unfortunately Israel and Judah rarely listened. Jesus, the true and perfect prophet also experienced much of the same. Hopefully, we can learn from these experiences and gratefully respond to God’s word to us.

It seems that the nation of Israel is presented with a "fork in the road" - a division of conflicting loyalties. Or is it really true that there are only two options here? What might it look like to live in light of the Gospel when your world is torn in two?

1 Kings 12: 1-20

This week we return to "the Story" which has helped us walk through the grand narrative of scripture. We begin a mini-series we are calling "A Kingdom Torn in Two" that will cover the time of the divided Kingdom of Israel that eventually leads to exile. This Sunday we consider the moment when Israel splits into two Kingdoms under the rule of King Solomon's son Rehoboam. Through Rehoboam we see the character flaws and failures that contribute to division and consider how we might live differently as the church of Jesus Christ.

This week we will see how sins like pride, arrogance, selfishness, indifference, and more contribute to the ongoing divides that happen not only in the stories found in the Scriptures, but in our lives as well. What can we learn? How can we be different? Is there any way to heal the divides? Join us as we explore these questions through the lives of Rehoboam, Jeroboam, and the Gospel of Jesus this week.

Isaiah 53:1-11

The gospel of God’s grace – especially when viewed from a distance as with Isaiah – meets us with both surprise and assurance. Who could believe this? How does THAT seem fair? I wasn’t expecting that! Could it really be that good? How can I be certain? Today we “return to the wonder” of surprise and assurance that Isaiah reports.

Messiah King: A Suffering Servant

Isaiah 52:7 - 53: 12

This Advent we continue to lean into the prophet Isaiah considering His words about the coming Messiah. We will consider what these words have meant for the people of God throughout history. This Sunday we will consider the Christmas story through the lens of Isaiah 52 & 53 and remember where this would all lead: the Lamb of God's sacrificial death for the sin of the world. We may again peak at the book of Revelation to see how this plays out in God's promised future for his people. Join us for worship this Sunday at 10:30 am!
