Is there something we can learn through David’s failure, and in our own? Is there still a way to have a heart for God while also living lives that seem to be marked by sin? Is there any hope for us? The short answer is yes.

We continue working through the grand narrative of scripture using "The Story" that helps us understand the Bible as a unified story that leads to Jesus. This week we begin a new mini-series / movement in the Story that will carry us through Advent called "A King is Coming." We will remember a time when Israel was united under one King while at the same time remembering the advent of the King, Jesus. This week we begin to look at the life of David and consider what made his heart different than the one who came before, Saul.

With King Saul the people of Israel got what they had asked for. With the newly anointed David the people of Israel were going to get the king that they needed and there may be no better story than David and Goliath to help us see this. Not only would this story affect Israel, but it still impacts us today.

Matthew 21:1-5

God’s people had wanted a king “so that we can be like the nations.” (I Samuel 8:19-20) Over time, the people would indeed get the king that they wanted, and it would be as unsatisfying and painful as the LORD said it would be. With Jesus though – the child of the First Advent, the Savior on the cross, and the True and Perfect Ruler at His Second Advent – God shows His love for us by giving us the King we truly need.

Chapter 10 (Saul)

We continue working through the grand narrative of scripture using "The Story" that helps us understand the bible as a unified story that leads to Jesus. This week we wrap up the mini-series / movement in the Story we are calling "New Land & Life." We began in the accounts found in Joshua and Judges that tell of the people's entering and learning to live in the land of Canaan with a brief look at one family's journey toward faithfulness in the book of Ruth. This Sunday we remember Israel's move toward a monarchy. We will consider what kind of King they longed for and the King they received in Saul. This continues to point us toward the King God would send in Jesus the Messiah and how that impacts how we live in service of him today.

Chapter 10 (Saul)

We continue working through the grand narrative of scripture using "The Story" that helps us understand the bible as a unified story that leads to Jesus. This is our last Sunday in our miniseries “A New Land and Life” where Israel is settling the promised land. Much of this portion is anchored on Saul but today we will be focusing on Eli and Samuel as they learn to listen to God. This story can teach us to question our own availability to hear God’s voice.

Call Me Bitter!

Ruth 1:1–5, 6–9a, 19-22; 4:13–17

Overwhelmed by the very real pain of her life circumstances, Naomi descends into the mire of “Victim Identity” as she blames God for what she has lost and choosing to name herself “Bitter.” (Ruth 1:20-21) All the while though, the LORD of Grace is at work taking the circumstances of her broken world with its real pain and losses and finally working things out for good for the blessing of her and others as He had done centuries earlier for Joseph. (Genesis 50:20)

Ruth 1: 6-18

This year we are working through the grand narrative of scripture using "The Story" that helps us understand the Bible as a unified story that leads to Jesus. This week we continue in new mini-series / movement in the Story we are calling "New Land & Life." We began in the accounts found in Joshua and Judges that tell of the people's entering and learning to live in the land of Canaan. This Sunday the scriptures offers a story of faithfulness in the midst of the chaos of this time in the story of Naomi - a woman who has lost everything, but God brings redemption through a Moabite woman (Ruth) and an Israelite relative (Boaz). We will be reminded of how God so often works through the everyday faithfulness of ordinary people.
