A Rescue - The Story
The Presence of the Spirit
Exodus 40:34-38
Interwoven throughout the story of the covenant promises and the gift of the ten commandments is an awareness of the presence of God among the people of Israel. The commandments are given because the people are to be representatives of that Presence. Throughout the book of Exodus, the people of Israel are responsive to the movement of the presence of God, most notably as represented by the Tabernacle. When we trace out this notion of presence throughout Scripture, we see the presence of God moving from the tabernacle to the temple; the dwelling of the Spirit on Jesus at his baptism, and ultimately the gift of the Spirit on Pentecost, such that Paul says to us "Your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit." In short, the invitation interwoven throughout the story of Exodus is an invitation to live as what we are by the gift of grace: the means by which God demonstrates His presence in our world.
