The Beginning of it All

Genesis 1-11 (Chapter 1 in the Story)

This Sunday we begin a new sermon series through the grand narrative of scripture using "The Story." We begin where everything began - at the creation of this world. What we will find this Sunday are some of the essential themes and movements that will carry throughout the biblical narrative.

Jesus taught his followers to pray “Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.” Proverbs 7 gives us insight into how to live out that prayer as we follow the journey of temptation to its full-flowering of destruction.

Proverbs 3: 1-8

This Sunday we conclude our summer sermon series in the book of Proverbs and Wisdom Literature entitled "Everyday Wisdom." We will consider some of the things we have learned during our summer of wisdom, but we will end with an important part of living wisely - the need for trust. Life is complex and difficult and often times wisdom is hard to discern or out of reach. In times like these trust is our only hope - faith is our lifeline. Friends, our hope beyond this series is to seek God's wisdom and choose to walk in faith.

The Book of Ecclesiastes

The “teacher” in the book of Ecclesiastes dives into the deep end of the meaning of life. He wonders and reflects on the point of wisdom, wealth, work, pleasures, life, and death. Much of the book and outlook seems dark, and yet there is tucked into the pages and the teacher’s wisdom a gift for us.

Understanding Temptation

Proverbs 7: 1-10, 21-27

This Sunday we continue our summer sermon series in the book of Proverbs and Wisdom Literature entitled "Everyday Wisdom." We continue our focus on the human heart. This week we consider how temptation is based in this working theory from Pastor John Mark Comer lies are "deceptive ideas that play to disordered, desires, which are normalized in a sinful society.” We will remember that the answer to the enemy's schemes and our own tendency toward sin is the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We will partake in communion to remember this gift.

James 2:14-26

Perhaps the person most impacted by Jesus was his younger brother James. James became the leader of the early Christian community in Jerusalem, and served as a wise guide and teacher. While we have been studying God's guidance for us through the "Wisdom Literature" of the Old Testament, James' short letter continues this dynamic instruction in the New Testament era. So today we gain wisdom from Jesus' brother about how our words of faith need to be put to works as actions that matter in our lives and families and communities.

We will begin a three-week focus on the human heart from a biblical perspective. This week we consider the desires of the heart and how wisdom calls us to be discerning of those desires. The Gospel and example of our Lord Jesus offers an alternative narrative than the teaching of our world. Come join us for worship!
