It is striking that in CS Lewis’ children’s classic The Chronicles of Narnia, the Christ-figure named Aslan is portrayed as a lion and not as a puppy. What might we lose if we misunderstand “The Fear of the LORD?”

The Fear of the Lord

Proverbs 1:7, 9:10, 14: 26-27

This Sunday we continue our summer sermon series in the book of Proverbs and Wisdom Literature called "Everyday Wisdom." We will focus on one of the primary ideas woven throughout the wisdom literature - "the fear of the Lord." The Proverbs speak of this being the beginning of wisdom and offer some of the benefits but we will also explore other passages in scripture to get a better understanding of this important idea.

The Fear of the Lord

Proverbs 9:10

What lies at the beginning and end of wisdom is the fear of the Lord. Often when we fear something or someone, we are taking it seriously. In order to truly gain wisdom, we have to take God seriously and this might actually disturb and scare us. However, when we do, we will see that the one we fear is for us and not against us offering us both a fortress and fountain for life.

How to Cultivate A Heart of Wisdom

Proverbs 3:1-12, 27-28

The Scripture teaches us that the Paradox of growing in God’s wisdom is that we must actively pursue what we can only be received. We will look at three of the directions that Proverbs call us to actively pursue in order to receive the wisdom that only He gives.

Ready to Receive?

Proverbs 3: 1-12, 27-30

This Sunday we continue our summer sermon series in the book of Proverbs and Wisdom Literature called "Everyday Wisdom." This week is the second week in a two-part study around the question - "How do we become wise?" Last week we considered our part in growing in wisdom and this week, we look at God's part in giving wisdom to those who are ready and open to receive it. What does a receptive heart look like? How do we position our hearts to be receptive?

It Can Only Be Received

Proverbs 2:1-11 & 3:5-6

Last week we heard that if we want wisdom, we have to go get it. This week we will be looking at the other side of the paradox of how we grow in wisdom, and that is we can only ever receive it. God is the one who gives wisdom. Not matter how hard we try or the energy and effort we put in; we can only ever depend on God to grant wisdom to us.

Pursue What Can Only Be Received

Proverbs 2:1-10

Growing in the wisdom of God is a Both/And matter. We must both pursue it, and recognize that we can only receive it by grace. As it turns out, we cannot grow in wisdom without the work of the Spirit, and the Spirit will not guide us in wisdom without our seeking Him.

This Sunday we continue our new summer sermon series in the book of Proverbs and Wisdom Literature called "Everyday Wisdom." We will explore the wisdom of God given in our ancient scriptures - wisdom that continues to prove itself true even today. This week we start a two-part study around the question - "How do we become wise?" This week we consider Proverbs 2:1-10 and explore our part in growing in wisdom. Next week, we will consider God's part in this important work of discipleship.

Proverbs 2:1-11

Over the last couple of weeks we have talked about wisdom and foolishness. This week and next we will be looking at what is involved in attaining wisdom. What we will see this Sunday is that if we want wisdom we are going to have to put in our energy and effort to get it. We can’t just sit back and expect it to come to us.

A Not-So-Simple Simple Faith

Proverbs 1:20-33

What does it mean to celebrate and embrace the simplicity of the Gospel message while living in the reality of a complicated world? The place and importance of wisdom reminds us that the Gospel means that Jesus entered into the messy, complicated, broken reality of the world and to live united to Christ as we make our way through an often-complicated world.
