The Journey of Renewal

Colossians 3:1-17

After making sure that the Colossians understood the good news of God’s grace in Jesus, Paul now shifts to the impact of the gospel in and upon our lives, which is a journey of renewal. The journey of being renewed in the image of our Creator is rooted in the finished work of Jesus, that also does some “finishing” in us.

Would it be Good News to hear that “the Great Creator-King” has been at work to bring purpose, joy, security, and fulfillment to your life and world? That is exactly what Paul has to say in this passage. For too much of my life, I have missed it though because the King has offered what I need in His way, and not what I want, when and how I want what I want.

Colossians 2:6-7

We continue our Eastertide sermon series through Colossians titled: "Jesus: The Glory and Mystery of God." This week we consider that there are many things that will try to test and distract us in this world but our goal is to remain rooted in Christ. This is where our freedom comes from. When we are free in him we will not be so easily deceived and carried away by false doctrines and trends.

A Different Game

Colossians 2:6-23

Living from a position of peace with God in Jesus is much different than living for that peace. The gospel is that we already have everything we need in Christ to live in this union with God. We don’t need to add to it, do something more for it, or reach a higher plane to encounter it. However, there will always be voices trying to take the gift of Christ from us by putting the burden He bore back on our shoulders.

We continue our Eastertide sermon series through Colossians titled: "Jesus: The Glory and Mystery of God." Last week we considered the core foundation of the Gospel that runs throughout Paul's letter. This week we consider how Paul speaks of growing in this Gospel and how we might foster communities of maturing Christ followers.

This Is the Gospel

Colossians 1:15-23

After opening his letter with words of encouragement and prayer, Paul now gives the Colossians one of his clearest and most robust definitions of the gospel of Jesus…the good news. Not only will this hymn of Paul’s about Jesus offer a clear understanding for the church then, but it continues to bless us with that same clarity today.

This week we consider the core foundation of the letter - Paul's Christ Poem in chapter 1 that speaks of the Lordship of Jesus. Christ and his work on the cross is the Gospel. We will consider how radical this message was in a first century context and how it speaks into our modern context as well.

Paul clearly lays out here all the uncompromisable behaviors that are central to the gospel – namely ZERO!! It’s about Jesus, beginning to end: The physical image of God, the Creator, the Sustainer, the Reconciler. And like Paul, we are called as servants of that message, not our own fulfillment or comfort.
