Can You See Who Has the Power?

Exodus 14

God’s rescue of the Israelites from Egypt showed off the true power of God. One would think that these multiple displays of God’s power would cause everyone to recognize the greatness of God and worship Him, however, that wasn’t the case. In fact, today we still struggle with recognizing and trusting God’s power. Thankfully our recognition isn’t the condition for God to put His power on display.

In a season of sadness, something strange happens. A forgotten and rejected man sees a bush on fire. Suddenly, unexpectedly, that man meets God in person. Now more than an idea, hope, or tradition, the LORD calls Moses to find his life in God’s calling.

Exodus 3: 1-15

This Sunday we begin a new sermon series through the book of Exodus we are calling "enough." This series will be our guide through the season of Lent that will bring us to Holy Week when we remember the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. The 40 days of Lent mirror the 40 days of Jesus in the desert before his Temptation which is an echo of Israel's 40 years in the desert after leaving Egypt. This series will direct our hearts at how Christ is enough just as the Lord was enough for God's people in the wilderness. This week we will consider the call of Moses and the name of the Lord laying a foundation for our series moving forward.

I Am Who I Am, and I Am Enough

Sometimes in life we have had enough. Sometimes we wonder whether we are enough. As we kick off our Lenten series this year we will encounter along with Moses the God who says, “I Am Enough” as He enters into the “enough-s” of our lives.

These two brief parables point us toward a scandal of cosmic proportions: there is hope and good news that reaches to all aspects of creation. In a world that so often points us toward fear, we lean into the hope that "though the wrong seems oft so strong, God is the ruler yet."

This week we wrap up our sermon series through the parables of Jesus we are calling "Scandal of Grace." We will be returning to Matthew 13 and consider the parable of the Hidden Treasure. Again, we will consider some simple truths this parable draws us toward and how reading this parable with a gospel lens helps us understand the parable's implications on our lives.

Sometimes what we say and what other people hear just aren’t the same thing. In the short parables of the hidden treasure and the pearl, Jesus chooses his words very intentionally to explain to us just how highly he values each and every one of us.

This Sunday we are nearing the conclusion of our sermon series through the parables of Jesus we are calling "Scandal of Grace." We continue to consider how Jesus' parables were a way to challenge and change people's assumptions and perceptions of God's Kingdom. This week we look at the Sheep and the Goats. We will first consider the context surrounding this parable from Matthew 24 and how that helps us understand what Jesus was hoping to communicate and what he was not.

Surprise

Some people love surprises, others…not so much. Our parable this week about the sheep and the goats reminds the disciples and us that Jesus will come one day to judge good and evil and yet his judgment will come with some surprise.
