Perfect Timing

Matthew 1:1-17

Have you ever had one of those moments where you were in the right place at just the right time? It feels great, like everything in the world is in the “right.” Well, when Christ came into the world it was God’s perfect timing. The good news is that because of this perfect timing of God, we can have peace that God’s timing and work will continue to be at work for our good in our lives.

This Sunday we continue our Advent series titled Genealogy of Hope where we are studying Matthew's genealogy of Jesus that opens his gospel account. We will consider what the genealogy tells us about God's perfect timing in history and what that means for our lives. There is a peace and assurance that comes when we understand God's hand that is in all things even the things we do not understand.

I remember making long, long car trips with our family and always being nervous that we would not get to our destination on time because something would break or go wrong along the way. The Genealogy of Hope in Matthew assures me that no matter what goes wrong along the way, we will arrive at our destination “at just the right time.”

This week we will look to Colossians to see our hope in the Messiah who is the visible image of God. We look to Jesus during this season as the fullness of God. God has always been faithful even in the midst of people's unfaithfulness.

Promises Fulfilled

Matthew 1:1-17

As we enter the season of advent, this season of hope, we remember that our God is a God who comes through on His promises. The anchor for this truth is Jesus who is the promised Messiah, son of David, son of Abraham. Knowing that God fulfills His promises offers us continued hope as we live each day.

Jesus invites people to come to Him and we will receive rest. This is good news for us and for the world, so…What is this promised rest, why do we need it, how do we get it, and what does it look like lived with others?

2 Kings 4:1-7

This Sunday we conclude our 4-week mini-series in Fusion we are calling "Elijah, Elisha, Jesus." We will read one of my favorite stories from the Hebrew scriptures from 2 Kings 6: 8-23 along with some of Jesus' most provocative teaching on loving our enemies. In this we will consider how loving like Jesus loves us is part of our missional witness of the Gospel good news of the kingdom.

Paul concludes his teaching on Grace-Gifts with a long list of concrete examples that say “Here is what the Grace-Gifted Body of Christ will look like in the real world.” It is a vision that is greater than any human, or group of humans or culture created by humans could ever achieve. It is a vision of what God is at work doing, not just in us as individuals, but in and through us together: Each of us equipped to be a part of something greater than ourselves: the Gospel of God’s Grace.

Getting down to “brass tacks:” What are possible Grace-Gifts that God might give to His Church? And how do I recognize the Grace-Gifts that God is giving to me?
