Title: Who Is The Hero Of The Story?

Text: Acts 9:1-19

Key Verse: Acts 9:6 - “Who are you, Lord?” Saul asked. “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting,” he replied. 6 “Now get up and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do.”

I’ve always thought of this as the story of Saul’s conversion. And it is. Lately, I’ve been reminded of the other important character in the story as the real hero!

Everyone I know – including myself – has some person or group that qualifies as “those people.” The Gospel of God’s Grace is good news even for them; beginning with the discovery that at the cross “those people” are adopted by the same Father who has adopted us!

What does it mean to be GOOD NEWS people? What does it look like to share GOOD NEWS? What is evangelism? This morning we will read Acts 8 where Luke through the life and testimony of Philip reveals it might be more than what we typically think about.

In Acts 8 this week we will see that there is no stopping or controlling the work of the Holy Spirit. All we can ever do is let the Spirit lead, join in on what the Spirit is doing, trusting that God will accomplish all that He wants to do through us and in others.

"At all costs" is something we say when we know that there is nothing we wouldn't do to accomplish a goal, or to achieve a purpose. As we dive deeper into Acts 6-7 this week, we will see what enabled Stephen to follow Jesus at all costs, and what that means for us.

We will consider the reality of opposition and suffering in this world and how faithfulness is evident in those moments and seasons. Stephen is a difficult story but a helpful one for all of us living in a broken world.

Freedom in Christ, through the work of the Spirit in our lives, offers us the ability to be who we are and bring to the table what we have to offer. The temptation that we see this week, both in the text and in our lives, is to “play a part” trying to look like something we are not which leads to the erosion of trust with one another, and the undercutting of our witness to Jesus in the world.

As the early church continues to grow at a dizzying rate resistance comes from multiple directions. Acts 4 showed us resistance coming from the Jewish authorities. This Sunday we will study Acts 5 which shows us in disturbing fashion how destructive sin can be in the community of faith when God's people forget they are people of grace. What does it mean for us to live freely into that grace of the gospel?

There are two contrasting events in today’s passage: the first is about the work of the Spirit producing a gospel generosity seen in a man nicknamed Barnabas or “son of encouragement.” The second is about the lying hypocrisy of Ananias and Sapphira, motivated by self-centeredness leading to judgement, death and fear.
