  • Hashtag 59 Season 3 Episode 51 Podcast: Territories
Hashtag 59's Season 3 Podcast is 50 Episodes long and each episode will provide SIX outdoor adventures in each of the US's 50 states.
We are doing these episodes in ABC Order of the states and episode fifty-one is all of the amazing Territories of the US.
The goal is to give you ideas and opportunities to experience outdoor adventure anywhere and everywhere in the United States of America.
Here's our list for US Territories:
    Puerto Rico
Go to Rincon and take the surf by storm!
Take a day trip to the island of Vieques: Vieques is a Caribbean island off Puerto Rico's eastern coast. It's known for boat tours of Bioluminescent Bay (or Mosquito Bay), where microorganisms give the water a blue-green glow. It also offers secluded beaches and snorkeling. Wild horses roam the countryside, much of which is preserved as the Vieques National Wildlife Refuge.
One of the island’s highest mountains, Tres Picachos is one of those places in Puerto Rico you have to see to believe (one of many, to be honest). Tres Picachos sits in the middle of Puerto Rico’s central mountain range, making it perfect for 360-degree views of nearby tropical peaks. Although only 3.4 miles long, the hike up Tres Picachos can be physically demanding, but you’ll have plenty of time to recover over locally-grown coffee at Cafe Tres Picachos.
Often overlooked by tourists because of its small size, Isla Culebrita is a 15-minute boat ride off of Culebra, the gorgeous island off of Puerto Rico’s eastern coast. Isla Culebrita is completely uninhabited, making one of the best places to take advantage of Puerto Rico’s many activities like snorkeling, hiking, and diving. If you want to make a day trip of Isla Culebrita, ask a local for insider tips on spotting sea turtles and swimming in the island’s natural seaside jacuzzis.
    Guam
Hike to Tarzan Falls: Tarzan Fall is a moderately difficult easy that is very simple to find and follow, especially by Guam standards. It is only about 30 minutes away from Tumon Bay, the commercial and hotel center of the island, so it's an easy morning or afternoon trip.
Spend a day at Ritidian Point - white sandy beaches and snorkeling are some of the reasons to visit. Just remember: it closes at 4, so get there early!
Stand up paddle boarding and swimming with dolphins via Guam Adventures
    Ypao Beach Archaeological Site Exploration
    American Samoa
National Park of the American Samoa: distributed across three islands: Tutuila, Ofu, and Ta‘ū. The park preserves and protects coral reefs, tropical rainforests, fruit bats, and the Samoan culture.
Stay with a Samoa family and learn the true culture there.
    USVI
If you are in St. John, hit up the Virgin Islands National Park! There are 22 miles of hiking, camping overnight on the beach and of course, the beach itself! Trunk Bay beach will cost you $4/person, but it’s well worth it.
The best snorkeling I ever had in my life was in St John. It was at ...Cinnamon Bay. Francis Bay is desolate with a lone port a potty. It’s a protected north shore area that you can swim all the way to Maho.
Sandy Pointe National Wildlife Refuge: Sandy Point is a southern beach in St. Croix that moonlights as a habitat and natural refuge for the leatherback sea turtles. During the day, you can swim in the shallow waters or sunbathe along the buff-colored sand. If you're lucky you might catch some turtles nesting their eggs in Sandy Point's 2-mile stretch. One TripAdvisor reviewer notes that this off-the-beaten path locale can be a bit of a challange to get to: "Once you enter the park, follow the gravel road ... to the end. [G]o slow, it is a single lane with one or two turnouts for traffic coming the opposite direction." When you finally arrive, you may recognize the setting from the movie, "The Shawshank Redemption." The spot was said to be Mexico in the flick, but the final scene was actually filmed right on Sandy Point's beach.
Snorkel with sea turtles on Honeymoon Beach in St Thomas, go for a long run/walk on the beach, and watch out for the barracudas.
    DC
Visit the National Mall, walk through all the free museums and then walk up to the Lincoln Memorial
Take a stroll through the Renwick Gallery
Run the Rock N Roll Washington DC Half Marathon
Bike to the state of Maryland from Georgetown DC via the C&O Canal Trail

  • Hashtag 59 Season 3 Episode 50 Podcast: Wyoming
Hashtag 59's Season 3 Podcast is 50 Episodes long and each episode will provide SIX outdoor adventures in each of the US's 50 states.
We are doing these episodes in ABC Order of the states and episode fifty is Wyoming.
The goal is to give you ideas and opportunities to experience outdoor adventure anywhere and everywhere in the United States of America.
    Here's our list for Wyoming:
    1. Visit Medicine Bow National Forest: This area extends over 2,222,313 acres in the states of Wyoming and Colorado. One of the hikes that looked awesome is the Medicine Bow Peak via Lakes Trail Loop. This is a 6.7 mile loop trail located near Saratoga, Wyoming that features a lake and is rated as difficult with an elevation gain of 1,712 feet. Don’t feel like doing much of a hike? The Crater Lake Trail is about 3 mile out and back. Absolutely stunning views from the rim and gorgeous quiet lake at the bottom and a gain of 775 feet.
    2. Bighorn Mountain National Forest: Located in north-central Wyoming, the Bighorn Mountains are a sister range of the Rocky Mountains. Conveniently located halfway between Mt. Rushmore and Yellowstone National Park, the Bighorns are a great vacation destination in themselves. There’s backpacking and day hiking options a plenty. The 189,039 acre Cloud Peak Wilderness preserves many sharp summits and towering sheer rock faces standing above glacier-carved, U-shaped valleys.
    3. Visit Hot Springs! Hot Springs State Park, Granite Hot Springs, Hobo Pool, Boiling River Hot Springs to name a few.
    4. Hike around Devils Tower or rock climb to the top!
    5. Get your cowboy on in Sheridan Wyoming. An Erin S (past podcast guest) favorite. National Forests, Cowboy Country, Trails End National Historic Site, and waterfalls are a few of your options.
    6. Should we talk about Yellowstone I guess? Yes of course, number six is Yellowstone National Park!!!!

Hashtag 59's Season 3 Podcast is 50 Episodes long and each episode will provide SIX outdoor adventures in each of the US's 50 states.
We are doing these episodes in ABC Order of the states and episode forty-nine is Wisconsin..
The goal is to give you ideas and opportunities to experience outdoor adventure anywhere and everywhere in the United States of America.
    Here's our list for Wisconsin:
    1. Visit Devil’s Lake State Park: The towering 500-foot bluffs surrounding Devil’s Lake – part of the ancient Baraboo Range – are estimated at 1.6 billion years old. Magnificent geological formations, including Devil’s Doorway and Balanced Rock, were created by water freezing and expanding in cracks in the rock. The Ice Age loop trail is a 13.7 mile trail along the entire park.
    2. Bike the Elroy-Sparta State Trail: Wisconsin has the distinction of being home to the first rails-to-trails conversion in the country, the Elroy-Sparta State Trail. Aptly traveling through the Bicycling Capital of America, this bike trail includes three old rail tunnels, including one more than three-quarters of a mile long! This is a 32-mile route through five small towns in Wisconsin’s gorgeous Driftless Area.
    3. Apostle Islands National Lakeshore: Hike the Lake Superior Ice Caves. Head out onto the frozen lake and follow the shoreline east about a half a mile to the first caves. The caves, arches, and ice formations extend a mile along the shoreline.
    4. Hike the National Scenic Ice Age Trail extending from one end of Wisconsin to the other. 1,200 Miles Long
    5. Take a hike to Timms Hill, Wisconsin's highest point at 1,951.51 feet. Visitors report finding the parking lot to be the toughest part!
    6. Wander around Fred Smith’s Concrete Park. This 18 acre park features more than 200 folk art concrete sculptures decorated with bits of glass and other found objects. It's a quirky, unique spot in Wisconsin everyone should visit at least once.

  • Hashtag 59 Season 3 Episode 48 Podcast: West Virginia
Hashtag 59's Season 3 Podcast is 50 Episodes long and each episode will provide SIX outdoor adventures in each of the US's 50 states.
We are doing these episodes in ABC Order of the states and episode forty-eight is West Virginia.
The goal is to give you ideas and opportunities to experience outdoor adventure anywhere and everywhere in the United States of America.
Here's our list for West Virginia:
    1. Go white-water rafting on the New & Gauley Rivers: White water rafting is one of the top things to do in West Virginia because there are world-class rapids. The New River features the Upper New, suitable for beginners, and the Lower New, with Class IV rapids that take you past the New River Gorge Bridge. The Gauley River is one of the most popular for experienced rafters, with Class V rapids and the nickname the "Beast of the East." Rapids are most intense here in the fall.
    2. Visit Coopers Rock State Forest: Coopers Rock State Forest is named for Coopers Rock, a series of sandstone cliffs above the Cheat River Gorge. Legend has it that a fugitive hid near what is now the overlook. A cooper by trade, he continued to make and sell barrels from his mountain hideout. The forest proper was established in 1936. Many of its structures, including the main overlook, picnic shelters and superintendent’s house, were built by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the Great Depression. Eleven of these structures have been listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Coopers Rock State Forest Loop is one of the most popular trails at 4.8 mile loop trail
    3. Bridge Day on New River Gorge: Bridge Day began in 1980 to commemorate the completion of the picturesque bridge over the New River Gorge. There were 5 BASE jumpers that year. Now, every 3rd Saturday in October, at the peak of the vibrant fall foliage, hundreds come to leap. There are often more than 800 jumps.
    4. Climb the East Coast’s Most Remote Peak. The only “true peak” on the East Coast that’s accessible only by rock climbing, Seneca Rocks is an automatic must for climbers. But just because you can’t hit the peak without climbing doesn’t mean you can’t get up high for some amazing views. The hike up the jagged fins of the rock ledges is steep but surprisingly easy, with plenty of rest stops
    5. Mountain Bike one of the most rare rated trails in the world. One of only a handful of trails in the world to be awarded “Epic” distinction by the International Mountain Biking Association for its jaw-dropping beauty, the 25-mile North Fork Mountain Trail traces backcountry ridges overlooking the wonder of Seneca Rocks. But it is not for faint of heart. There are no exit points along the rugged route, and no water stops, either. So you have to come prepared— but it’s worth it for one of the most amazing treks of your life.
    6. Reach Eagles Level. Our state is full of amazing hikes, but the hike to Hanging Rock Raptor Observatory brings you eye-level with majestic hawks, falcons and eagles as they soar. The old lookout tower on the mountaintop is now one of the nation’s premier outlooks for birds of prey. But the view itself is reward enough: the rolling green mountains seem to stretch out infinitely beneath you before fading into the fog.

We are doing these episodes in ABC Order of the states and episode forty-seven is Washington
The goal is to give you ideas and opportunities to experience outdoor adventure anywhere and everywhere in the United States of America.
    Here's our list for Washington:
    1. Go to the one square inch of silence in the Hoh Rainforest in Olympic National Park.
    2. Head to the end of the PCT trail and cheer on a thru hiker as they finish!
    3. Mt Rainier - Spray Park. Lupine!
    4. Check out Field Trip & take a foraging trip with Langdon Cook.
    5. Create your own Brewery Hop through Seattle on bikes - my suggestion is checking out the Ballard area of Seattle and visit Fremont Brewing, Stoup Brewing, Reuben’s Brews, Obec Brewing and finally Peddler Brewing Company (owned by former Columbus-ites!). Bonus stop: Un Bien, which is an amazing cuban sandwich shop on 15th Avenue in Ballard!
    6. Have an evening picnic on Rialto Beach in Olympic National Park. The beach is filled with sea stacks, or remains of trees and is an infamous tree graveyard. Grab some food, a few drinks and a blanket.

Hashtag 59's Season 3 Podcast is 50 Episodes long and each episode will provide SIX outdoor adventures in each of the US's 50 states.
We are doing these episodes in ABC Order of the states and episode forty-six is Virginia.
The goal is to give you ideas and opportunities to experience outdoor adventure anywhere and everywhere in the United States of America.
    Here's our list for Virginia:
    1. Spend a weekend in Charlottesville, home to the University of Virginia going wine tasting and then take a drive through the Blue Ridge Mountains. The mountain range is located in the eastern United States, and extends 550 miles southwest from southern Pennsylvania through Maryland, West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Georgia. You can also throw in a side trip to Monticello, home of Thomas Jefferson
    2. The Great Dismal Swamp - this 111,000+ acres of swampland centered around Lake Drummond means countless hiking, fishing, and boating opportunities, but the real appeal is the swamp’s incredible biodiversity — there’s more than 200 types of birds, 10 different turtle species, and 52 species of butterfly, plus black bears, bobcats, whitetail deer, and otters. Canoes, kayaks, and small boat craft are permitted on Lake Drummond, so you can silently paddle through ancient cypress trees, spy on wildlife, and explore the foggy hidden pathways of the flooded forest. To ensure the protection of the swamp’s delicate ecosystem and to preserve its long history, be sure to closely follow park guidelines — no camping outside of designated areas, swimming, fires, or collecting plants (or animals!). You can pitch a tent at the Lake Drummond Reservation — it’s canoe-in only, but there’s running water and restrooms.
    3. Luray Caverns historical walking tour.
    4. Hike the Appalachian Trail thru Shenendoah National Park with a trek up Old Rag
    5. Grayson Highlands State Park
    6. Demascus and Avanton

  • Hashtag 59 Season 3 Episode 45 Podcast: Vermont
Hashtag 59's Season 3 Podcast is 50 Episodes long and each episode will provide SIX outdoor adventures in each of the US's 50 states.
We are doing these episodes in ABC Order of the states and episode forty-five is Vermont.
The goal is to give you ideas and opportunities to experience outdoor adventure anywhere and everywhere in the United States of America.
    Here's our list for Vermont:
    1. Do a Thru-Hike on the Long Trail: The Long Trail is the oldest long distance trail in the United States. There's no need to hike the whole trail - at 273 miles long, it's easy to find a point to hop on and off. Opened in 1930, the Long Trail in Vermont is the oldest long-distance hiking trail in the United States and reportedly inspired Benton MacKaye to plan the Appalachian Trail. It spans the length of Vermont traversing the Green Mountains' significant summits. Something of note: The Long Trail was built before trail design was a thing. Therefore, most of the climbs go straight up the mountains and don't use switchbacks to ease the steepness of an ascent. Factor in the muddy soil, the eroded pathways, and the constant ups and downs and you will find that the Long Trail is very deserving of its name.
    2. Bike Ride on the Colchester Causeway: There is a 4-mile long, 10 foot wide gravel path extending across Lake Champlain that connects to the original Rutland Railroad bed.
    3. Do a tour of the Vermont Cheese Trail: There are over 53 farm or cheese production facilities open to the public. Make sure to check out the website VTcheese.com for a full map.
    4. Trail run or hike thru Shelburne Farms on Lake Champlain in Shelburne Vermont. Stay for some cheese!
    5. Ski Smugglers Notch and various other slopes via the Stowe Mountain Resort which is where the von Trapp family settled which made for the Sound of Music basis. A little bit of Austria, a lot of Vermont.
    6. Run the Burlington Vermont marathon and stick around for one of the best farmers markets in the country!
