  • Talking hoops and the Celtics season to come with Maura Healey

It isn't very often that a candidate for a major political office in the United States is also a huge fan of the sport of basketball, to say nothing of the Boston Celtics. It's even less common that they are scholars of the game's history. And it's nearly unheard of one being all that and a former pro in the sport.

But that would be an excellent way to describe the current Democratic candidate for Governor in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Maura Healey. Currently the state's Attorney General since 2014, Healey has previously been co-captain of the Harvard Crimson women's basketball team and played overseas in Austria for UBBC Wustenrot Salzburg.

Healey has thrown her hat in the ring for the Governorship, but she doesn't just stick to politics; a serious fan of the Celtics and the sport in general, she spent her years as a player donning No. 14 in honor of Celtics legend Bob Cousy, and her time playing the sport inflects her work as a politician today.

The hosts of the CLNS Media "Celtics Lab" podcast got a chance to sit down with her to talk about the Celtics of today and our past, the sport more broadly.

At the end of the pod (so you can drop out if that's not your thing), we talk about her plans and tasks ahead if she wins the race to be 73rd Governor of Massachusetts.

Join your usual hosts Cameron Tabatabaie, Alex Goldberg, and Justin Quinn for one of our favorite interviews in some time, as well as the trickle of news coming in from Donovan Mitchell's trade to the Cleveland Cavs to rumbles of what Boston might do to fill their final remaining open roster slots.

  • Where are they now? Keeping tabs on players from the past with Honest Larry

The Boston Celtics can finally concentrate on finding the players on finishing their roster with the Kevin Durant trade request from the Brooklyn Nets rescinded, and in so doing will likely create some new alumni in the process by bringing on a few new players in place of the depth that they had in the 2021-22 NBA season.

But where are the players from Boston's past signing for this upcoming season? What teams and leagues are they signing with? Who is making the leap into coaching? Who are still waiting for the logjam that is KD that just broke to open up some spots for them to sign with a team in the Association?

For this episode of the CLNS Media "Celtics Lab" podcast, we decided to take a trip down memory lane to get ourselves up to speed on where the alumni of the Celtics are going to spend the upcoming season.

To do that we enlisted friend of the pod and unofficial team Twitter historian Honest Larry, who linked up with your usual hosts Cameron Tabatabaie, Alex Goldberg, and Justin Quinn to figure out where these blasts from Boston's past hang their hats (and their jerseys) now.

  • Digging into the 2022-23 NBA schedule for the Boston Celtics with Max Lederman

After plenty of buildup complete with leaks about the more important games of the year in advance of the big day, the 2022-23 NBA schedule finally dropped this past Wednesday afternoon, immediately sparking speculation, projections, and analysis of what the lay of the land for the Celtics' next campaign will mean for the team and their 2023 title aspirations.

When will key players get rest this season? What are the marquee games? How many back to backs will there be? Is the travel situation favorable for the team? How strong is the slate of opponents, and when are the hardest and easiest parts of the league calendar?

Most importantly of all, taking all of the above into account, where do we expect Boston to finish relative to the rest of their peers in the league's Eastern Conference?

To answer all these questions and more, the hosts of the CLNS Media "Celtics Lab" podcast got together with NBC Sports Boston's Max Lederman to talk all things schedule related for the 2022-23 season, as well as some catch-up for what little news there's been since the last pod.

Join your usual hosts Justin Quinn, Alex Goldberg, and Cameron Tabatabaie to get your bearings on how the next Celtics season will play out in this episode of the Lab.

  • Keeping up with the Horfords: Talking the offseason, basketball abroad and more with Anna Horford

While the dog days of summer are upon us, it might seem as if the wider NBA world is in something of a slumber. But the league has been hard at work promoting its brand abroad, while players like Boston Celtics star forwards Al Horford and Danilo Gallinari have been getting ready to represent their respective national teams.

Players have also been finding an offseason groove that suits what they need to focus on, whether that means family time or time abroad playing with FIBA. To talk about what's been going on with her family since the Finals, NBA investment in Latin American basketball, and other goings-on in her orbit, we brought on friend of the pod Anna Horford to share her perspective.

We talk about her brother Jon's recent run for office, Dominican basketball (and other) culture, and some potential projects coming down the pike with the Horford family.

We also touch on the trickle of news coming out as always with your regular hosts Cameron Tabatabaie, Justin Quinn, and Alex Goldberg, so be sure to check this episode out.

  • Diving into the seemingly endless combinations of lineups Boston could use in 2022-23

The Boston Celtics had by most accounts one of the better offseasons around the NBA, adding veteran forward Danilo Gallinari and former Indiana Pacers point guard Malcolm Brogdon via free agency and trade, respectively.

That they managed to do so with a collection of players who rarely saw the floor in the postseason left all of the Celtics' core of players from the 2022 postseason that got them to within two wins of an NBA title has put the Celtics in an enviable position. The depth Boston now has should not only help the team keep minutes down for their best players throughout the 2022-23 regular season, but also affords the team a dizzying array of options to play in terms of different lineups.

They can play very big, or hold their own with small lineups, able to field adept small and tall ball units equally. A squad built for switchy defense? Check. One built for shooting? Easy. Is the plan to put the opponent in a spin cycle with a mixture of passing and offensive skills? Got it.

On this episode of the CLNS Media "Celtics Lab" podcast, your usual hosts Alex Goldberg, Cameron Tabatabaie, and Justin Quinn take stock of Boston's embarrassment of riches when it comes to the players they can put on the floor together.

  • Beating back the summer doldrums with Jayson Tatum

The NBA's summer doldrums are finally here, with the league's seemingly endless well of news finally showing signs of drying up. But star Boston Celtics swingman Jayson Tatum has been keeping pretty busy despite the lull and stopped by the Celtics Lab podcast to fill us in on what he's been doing to prepare for next season, how he feels about trade rumors, and his new campaign about hydration with Gatorade.

There are also rumbles about said trade rumors being much ado about nothing, some camp signings for open roster spot competitions, and word of the Celtics' 2022-23 preseason schedule to discuss among several other topics of note still trickling in at the start of August.

On this episode of the CLNS Media "Celtics Lab" podcast, we get you the goods on the latest Boston news -- or at least what little there still is two months out from next season.

Join your usual hosts Alex Goldberg, Cameron Tabatabaie, and Justin Quinn as they do their best to beat the heat with Jayson Tatum in the Lab.

  • Remembering Bill Russell the man and activist with Sopan Deb

What Boston Celtics Hall of Fame big man Bill Russell did on the basketball court is unparalleled in the history of sport, winning 11 NBA championships while helping to integrate the sports as part of the first all-Black starting five in league history, its first Black superstar, and first Black head coach among countless accolades.

But it is easy to lose the activism, mentorship, and life experience of the man in lauding the player, and perhaps more than anyone in NBA history, those things were inseparable. Russell was a monumental human being who answered the call for justice at what might have been great personal expense and at great risk, and it would be a disservice to who he was to elevate his identity as a basketball player above the rest of what made him so special.

With that in mind, the hosts of the CLNS Media "Celtics Lab" podcast linked up with the New York Times' Sopan Deb to talk with him about Russell's legacy as a person and an activist, and how his uncompromising perspective has shaped the wider world of today far beyond the NBA.

Join Justin Quinn, Alex Goldberg, and Cameron Tabatabaie as they remember the Russell that inspired them in more ways than the story 11 rings can tell as we memorialize not only an NBA and Celtics great, but one of the most important figures of the last century.

  • Talking Chuck Cooper's legacy, race, the Celtics, and more with Cooper's son, Chuck III

Nearly 75 years after the first Black man in history was drafted into the NBA by the Boston Celtics, the city of Boston and America more broadly still have a long way to go in terms of equity for people of color. And while jabs at Boston's pretenses of progressivism via the behavior of their fans sadly holds water even today at times, the history of the organization itself in that regard is an important one.

Perhaps no player was more important to setting that in motion than the man in question drafted by the Celtics in 1950, Duquesne's own Chuck Cooper. And with that era also back in the contemporary news cycle due to former NBAer JJ Redick's widely-criticized comments about the level of play in Cooper's era, we thought it would be a perfect time to link up with his son Chuck III.

In this episode of the CLNS Media "Celtics Lab" podcast, we talk about Cooper's trailblazing on and off of the court, the toll it took, and his and the Celtics' legacy in fighting for racial and social equity.

We also get into the good works the Chuck Cooper Foundation does up to this day in addition to tackling Redick's misguided takes head on.

Join your usual hosts Cameron Tabatabaie, Alex Goldberg, and Justin Quinn for one of our favorite episodes in a long while -- and a refreshing break from hypothetical trade talks about you know who.

  • Examining the rumbles of a Jaylen Brown - Kevin Durant trade

Fans of the Boston Celtics awoke to news their favorite team might be gearing up to trade not only Jaylen Brown but also Derrick White or perhaps even Marcus Smart and more to the Brooklyn Nets in exchange for veteran superstar Kevin Durant. And while there is little debate that as things stand now that Durant is the better player in terms of what he can do for raising a team's postseason potential, the asking price, his salary, age, disposition, and injury history are also elements in need of consideration.

But as the morning continued, more information trickled out about the timing and potential intent of such reports percolating to the surface. Who benefits from such news breaking? What other clues can we divine from related reports about the level of interest in dealing for Durant around the league?

And perhaps more importantly, how is Brown's camp feeling about all of this, and might it be an issue of concern when the team wants to re-sign the Georgia native?

To get to the bottom of things, we linked up with the Boston Herald's Mark Murphy to try and get the behind-the-scenes info the veteran beat writer is hearing, with Murphy having spoken to sources close to Brown after the news broke this morning.

Check out the pod and get your bearings on some very splashy news that could very well simply end up another drop in a sea of Silly Season misinformation.

  • Goodbye, Las Vegas, RIP TPE; Hello NBA doldrums

The 2022 NBA 2K23 Las Vegas Summer League has come and gone in the same way the Boston Celtics' $17.1 million Evan Fournier Traded Player Exception (TPE) has, leaving the Celtics close to being done (we think, anyway) with their offseason team building plans and fans of the ball club with NBA-related content of current news.

As the period of the league calendar unaffectionately known as the "doldrums" -- named after the part of the Atlantic sailing ships used to avoid lest they be trapped in a literal sea of inactivity or movement -- settles in, the hosts of the CLNS Media "Celtics Lab" podcast take a look at what might be left to do with Boston's roster, what might have been with the TPE, and grill host Cameron Tabatabaie about what the Sin City NBA experience is like behind the scenes.

Joined by your usual hosts Justin Quinn and Alex Goldberg, they also get you up to date on the trickle of news still coming in, and even throw some darts at what the NBA could do to spice up a midseason tournament Commissioner Adam Silver has been trying to spark interest in.

As the NBA media cycle starts to wind down, join us on the Celtics Lab to wrap up the busy part of the offseason while we wait for training camp to kick off in late summer.
