An investigation is underway after police fatally shot a suspect with a machete in Kalihi early Wednesday.

Authorities said officers were first dispatched to a parking lot near a game room on School Street around 2:30 a.m. after reports of a man who was slashed in his hand. Police said his finger was cut off.

Hawaii on Wednesday reported 472 new COVID-19 cases and two additional fatalities on Wednesday.

The two new deaths included an Oahu woman in her 40s and an Oahu woman in her 80s. Both were hospitalized and had underlying conditions, the state said.

The death toll now stands at 545.

The state said Wednesday’s new cases were a partial count due to an interruption with the electronic laboratory reporting system. Therefore, any delayed test results will be included in Thursday’s and Friday’s case counts.

Police have closed a portion of North School Street following an investigation into an officer-involved shooting in Kalihi that left a suspect dead, according to sources.

In an effort to combat a surge in COVID-19 cases and curb the spread of the highly contagious delta variant, Gov. David Ige on Tuesday announced a return to restrictions on gatherings.

“The delta variant has truly changed the COVID-19 pandemic here in the islands,” Ige said, in a news conference. “We have seen increased transmission and we must take action in order that our health system is not overwhelmed.”

Hawaii on Tuesday reported 436 new COVID-19 cases amid a concerning surge in hospitalizations across the state.

There were no new fatalities reported. The death toll stands at 543.

Lt. Gov. Josh Green says 246 people infected with the virus are now hospitalized, which is up by 20 compared to Monday.

Of those hospitalized, 50% of patients in the COVID ward are under 50 years old, Green added.

As the delta variant of COVID-19 continues to spread across the islands, Gov. David Ige says he’s considering restrictions again, particularly on gatherings.

His comments came as the state continues to report some of its highest case counts since the start of the pandemic. On Monday, the state reported 437 new cases, but over the weekend, Hawaii continued to see cases over 600.
