Hawaii reported 65 new COVID cases on Monday and no additional fatalities.

Of the new cases, 52 were on Oahu, 10 were on Maui, and two were on the Big Island. One resident was diagnosed out-of-state.

Since the pandemic began, Hawaii has seen 31,446 cases of COVID-19. The death toll from the virus in Hawaii stands at 474.

In the last 14 days, there have been 1,180 new infections in Hawaii.

Meanwhile, the state said it has administered 1,064,942 vaccine doses so far.

Oahu now opens vaccines to everyone over the age of 16, joining all counties in the state.

The Honolulu Police Department has released body cam footage of a police shooting that left a 29-year-old man dead.

Honolulu Police Chief Susan Ballard said Thursday that the reason police officers fatally shot a man in Nuuanu was clear: He was putting their lives in jeopardy.

But some say that the police department needs to start quickly releasing the body cam footage to justify their actions for this shooting and others and to address community concerns.

Police were called to the home on Coelho Way when residents claimed the suspect — identified by family as 29-year-old Lindani Myeni — walked into their home, removed his shoes, and started talking to them. HPD said he had no weapons and no criminal record.

Ballard said when officers arrived, he charged them and repeatedly punched them, and a Taser failed to stop him. The officers shot the suspect multiple times, Ballard said, after he repeatedly punched officers, including one who sustained multiple facial fractures and a concussion.

Vaccinated trans-Pacific travelers won't have to take a second test after arriving on Hawaii Island. The county says it will be the first in the state to do this under the Safe Travels program.

Ballard spoke Thursday morning, defending the officers’ actions and saying they all walked away from the incident with injuries. One of the police officers, the first on the scene, sustained multiple facial fractures and a concussion. He was last listed in stable condition, but remains hospitalized.

“This person seriously injured our officers and their lives were in jeopardy,” she said.

The suspect was identified by family as Lindani Myeni. His wife said they have two children, and that he is originally from South Africa. They moved to the islands in January.

The investigation continues into a deadly officer-involved shooting in Nuuanu late Wednesday.
