Hawaii's Maleko and Flash Show

It's back! The Hawaii International Film Festival celebrates their 39th year in Hawaii with 200 films slated for November. We talk to the Artistic Director of HIFF about the program, how films get chosen, and who the special guests are this year. Plus Melvin Milton from Rum Fire Waikiki brings the Pride Party Bar and serves up drinks for days from the old Wave Waikiki Days.

She's been called Hawaii's Aretha Franklin, and she's performing her favorite Aretha Franklin song for us in this episode of the podcast. Paula Fuga joins us to promote her shows. She's playing at the Blue Note in October. She plays at Aloha Tower Marketplace in September, where she'll join Eli Mac to perform the new hit single Roots Girl. This podcast is in honor of & celebrating the birthday of the late owner of next door & SoHo, both iconic Chinatown clubs, who passed away from stage 4 brain cancer in 2016, Daniel Gray. His birthday would have been September 5th. Daniel was also best friends with super CW. Together they founded the Aloha Cancer Project, a charity that helps people diagnosed with cancer and their loved ones navigate that new world. NextDoor invites everyone to Dougie for Daniel fundraiser concert for the aloha cancer project this Thursday, September 5th, 2019, at NextDoor. 

The fundraiser will include a live music line up including Mike Izon, DNA Music & surprise guests. Daniel's favorite song was "Teach Me How To Dougie" by Cali Swag District. The artist, OFB Yung from Cali Swag District, will be performing this song for Daniel as we Dougie in his honor. We strongly suggest you come early to view the last project Christa worked on before passing. The seminal documentary "The Adventures of Super CW - Cancer Sucks," part of which was filmed at NextDoor, will be shown at 6:30 pm. This will be the 1st time it's been screened since it's debut at Hawaii international film festival.

It's all hosted by Daniel's long-time drinking buddy, flash. Today we have the former bar mgr of SoHo & now the owner of NextDoor, Marty making us cocktails as well as OFB Yung.

The podcast immediately falls of the rails with Maleko not being here, Flash getting too drunk & forgetting to hit record to start the show. It went downhill from there as they drank $150 bottles of rum from Shay Smith, owner of Ocean Vodka & $10,000 Mai Tais by Bacardi Mai Tai World Champ Christina Maffei. Kelii Heen tags along for the free alcohol & talk about the worlds most revolutionary bottle of water.

Things got even more crazy than usual when Danny Cassler, founder of Pacific Ink & Art Expo returned, bringing a local tattoo artist Simon with him. We talked about all things tattoo. Plus Tasho Pierce from the Joy of Sake educated everyone on all the different types of sake & why & how they are made. Even Flash's homie Blaise Sato made hist 1st podcast appearance!
