Today I’m joined by Dr. Christine Baugh, an assistant professor in the University of Colorado’s Anschutz Center for Bioethics and Humanities. Christine’s work focuses on acute and chronic health implications of repetitive brain injury from sport, and the resultant individual, institutional, policy and ethical considerations. She was named a Forbes “30 under 30” in sports, and also studies risk, decision making and morality in sports.
I wanted to talk with Christine about concussions, CTE and "return to play" protocols. At the very least, it is an institutional risk management issue; but at its very core, it speaks to the care and concern we have for the students who come to our campuses.
Next time you watch a game, pay close attention to how many times decisions are made about whether an athlete can "return to play"...it might be one of the most important decisions we make on behalf of our students.
