What does it truly mean to be successful—and who taught us that definition?
In this episode of the Healing Chingon Podcast, Frankie explores how success is often defined for us long before we are old enough to decide what we genuinely want. For many first-generation, immigrant, multilingual, and multicultural adults, success can carry the additional weight of family sacrifice, financial stability, assimilation, respectability, and the pressure to prove that every struggle before us was worth it.
Frankie shares his personal experience of navigating life as a Mexican American, confronting cultural expectations, hiding parts of his identity to feel accepted, and eventually recognizing that the qualities he once viewed as obstacles were actually some of his greatest strengths.
This conversation is not about diminishing anyone else’s hard work. It is about acknowledging that people can work equally hard while facing very different barriers—and creating space for honest conversations, learning, empathy, and growth.
Most importantly, this episode is an invitation to redefine success for yourself. Success may include financial freedom and professional achievement, but it can also mean protecting your mental health, honoring your boundaries, embracing your identity, building meaningful relationships, and creating a life that truly fulfills you.
What does success look like when it is defined by you—not your family, culture, career, or society?
