  • COVID-19 Vaccines are keeping People out of Hospitals

    Transcript:

Bannister Wolfe: Bannister here, Let’s continue to Think Healthy. How about I give you One more reason to get vaccinated?

Doctor Puja: This is what I want everyone listening to know. If you’re over the age of 65, both Moderna and the Pfizer vaccine, are showing overwhelming evidence that their vaccines are preventing hospitalizations from COVID. That means that if you happen to get covid after you’ve been vaccinated, the chances of you getting hospitalized, are almost non-existent.

Bannister, I can’t tell you enough how great this news is.

It basically means that if you’re vaccinated, the chances of you getting severely ill are almost gone.

Bannister Wolfe: And, that’s Doctor Puja. So, it’s worth repeating. Please get vaccinated because once you do & then if you happen to get covid–guess what? You’re less likely to be seriously ill. Go get vaccinated!

  • Sleep More and Sleep Well.

    Bannister here, let’s continue

    to Think Healthy.

Today we talk about the chances

    of getting dementia.

    Recently, Nature

    Communications published a major study.

    Basically, the study found

that people over the age of 50–who

slept less than six hours per night–had

    a HIGHER RISK of

    developing dementia–when

    it was compared to people

who slept around 7 hours per night!

    Hi Bannister!

    The study looked at people

    over a 25 period.

And it found that the risk of dementia

went up for all sorts of people.

    So, look, the study suggests

    that when we sleep less,

many functions of our body are disrupted.

    And THIS increases

    the chances of getting dementia.

BUT, this does not mean that

    if you sleep less, you’re

    going to get dementia.

    Our bodies are extremely complicated

and many times you’re going to find that

    there are more than one

    contributing factors for a disease.

So, sleep more if you can!

    Rest more if you can!

    But…

    don’t get yourself into panic

    if you’re sleeping less

    than 7 hours a night.

    As always,

talk to your health care provider!

    And that’s Doctor Puja.

  • Salicylic Acid = Good Hair Day!
    Hi, Bannister here:
    Let's continue to Think Healthy.
    Today.
we're going to talk about oily hair.
    You need to understand
    that there's NO REASON
    for you to feel embarrassed
    or frustrated with oily hair.
    "Things like your genetics, hormones
    & bad hair products
    can all cause oily hair."
    "I want you to know
oily hair isn't a sign of poor hygiene.
It just means that your sebum glands
    are producing too much oil."
    Is there a simple way
    to fix this problem?
    Shampoos have been shown
    to be very effective
    in managing oily hair,
    but these aren't
    your regular ole shampoos.
The ingredient that you need to have in
    them is called salicylic acid.
    This active ingredient is going
to help your oil glands work normally.
    If that doesn't work
in about 3 to 4 weeks,
it may be time to go
talk to your health care team.
    I've got a worksheet
    that you can fill
out and take to your Doctor.

  • Meditation Works
    Hello, Bannister here.
    Let's continue to Think Healthy!
We're going to talk about meditation.
Lately, a lot of research is showing that
    meditation has actual
    physiological effects.
    to our body.
    This basically means
    that meditation affects
the way our brain and body interact
    with our environment.
So what does meditation actually do?
    Some forms of meditation work
    by activating our parasympathetic system.
    Meditation works
    to activate your body's
    ability to calm itself down.
    This decreases your heart rate,
    it increases your focus,
    and has been shown
    to reduce your blood pressure.
    And that's Doctor Puja.
One technique that you can use-
    it's called Grounding.
    Here's how to do it.
    Visualize an orange.
    Now, imagine that
    you're peeling that orange.
Now, pay attention to the textures,
the smells, the shape of the peel.
    Visualize everything and that's it.
    You're now meditating!
Do this a couple times a day.
By taking a few moments for us
every day, what we're actually doing
    is we're telling our body
    and mind to relax.
    We're literally reducing the stress
    that's floating in our system.
And, that's always a good thing!
So, find a few minutes, meditate,
and we'll see you next time.

  • Hunched over in Pain?
    Transcript:
Bannister here! Let's continue to Think Healthy. Most people seem to think that back pain occurs when there is an injury to our spinal cord. That's actually not true.
"Rather, most back pain comes from injuries to our muscles and ligaments and not our spinal cord. When you pick up stuff with improper lifting techniques, have a few extra pounds on ya. And, if you're sitting around at your job for long periods of time, you're likely going to have some back pain." And that was Doctor Puja. Having said that, what are some of the more common ways of treating back pain? "Home stretches, medications like ibuprofen, and hands-on treatments like OMT. If that pain continues, it's time to talk to your health care team.

  • Cinnamon and Diabetes
Doctor Puja looks at some of the negative side effects of using cinnamon for diabetes.  Hint: It's not good!
    Hi Bannister here, let's
    continue to Think Healthy.
    Today, we're talking about
    cinnamon & diabetes.
This is all you need to know:
    STOP USING Cinnamon
as a substitute for proper medicines
    when you're trying
    to control for diabetes.
There's a lot of research out there
showing that Cinnamon does not cause
    dramatic reductions in your A1C.
    "I want you to understand
    that Cinnamon does not
    reduce blood sugars.
The research that was used to say
Cinnamon is good: that's all wrong.
In fact, the amount of risk
    that you're
putting to your liver far outweighs
any good that may come from cinnamon.
    So what works?
    Exercise works.
    A good diet works.
Taking your medicine on time works.
    But wait, there's good news.
"You don't have to lose a lot of weight
    just losing around
    10 pounds does wonderful
things to your body and blood sugars."
There you have it: lose 10 pounds
& leave that cinnamon for your bun.
