The Torah Teachers continue the discussion of the Book of II Kings, from chapter 9 into 10, and still more of the related “difficult questions.”

This week we see more “prophecies fulfilled,” including the grisly demise of the evil pagan queen Jezebel.

And given how much of the story involves rulers who rebel against the Word of YHVH, but may not have been QUITE as proud of it as many today are, it’s hard to ignore the parallels.

In this case, that includes prophecies that involve what looks a lot like murder, or at least violent deaths. Sometimes there are things that the still-whoring ‘church’ would rather ignore that speak volumes about why we not only went into exile in the first place, but are still there.

Did Elisha mislead Hazael, on behalf of the King of Syria, for example? Was it a message, or a thinly-veiled suggestion, or even a warning?

Speaking of which, there DO seem to be more than a few references of warnings about marriages in this story of well.

And all of that also, as the teachers discuss, probably contains a lot more parallels to current events, too, than might be comfortable in post-Biblical AmeriKa — just as it was in the paganized Israel of the time.

This week the teachers continue the study of II Kings from chapter 6 into the beginning of chapter 8, and the events relate to everything from Biblical economics, including inflation and deflation, to a larger question about whether what is true for people applies to nations.

Is it true then that to whom, or that which, much is given — much is still expected?

II Kings chapter 5 is one of those stories in the history of the divided kingdoms that actually IS part of the regular haftorah cycle, because it has to do with “tzaraat”, a spiritually-based plague NOT to be confused with “leprosy”.

Join the Torah teachers for a look at the interaction of Naaman with the prophet Elisha, and, as usual, a bit more than gets talked about in most ‘sunday schools’.

This week the teachers ‘wrap up’ the Book of First Kings, and continue into the sequential Book (not really divided anyway in Hebrew versions) of II Kings, where, among other things, we see a bit more of the prophet EliYahu, or Elijah.

And as Rob Miller summarizes the “end of the FIRST part of the continuing story,” the Book ends with the divided kingdom of Israel having gone completely ‘over to the dark side.’

Somehow, it speaks volumes.

This week the teachers discuss the conclusion of I Kings chapter 22 — the end of the story of Ahab, and the culmination of the revealing prophecies that surround it.

The Torah teachers complete the discussion of Ahab, Jezebel, and the vineyard of Naboth in I Kings chapter 21, and forge into chapter 22, where there’s more talk of war — this time with Jehoshaphat, King of Judah at the time, as well.

This week the Torah teachers tackle what turns out to be a source of more controversy, contradiction, and disagreement than you might have thought:

the story of King Ahab’s admittedly prototypically-Evil wife Jezebel, and the whole story of Naboth and what he may have thought was “his vineyard.”

Was there REALLY some culpability on Naboth’s part? And is the king’s word really “law”?
