"What a Drag it is Being Old," said the Rolling Stones, so Mom goes running for the shelter of a little yellow helper.

In verse 1: kids are different--1 pill
    In verse 2: husband-pleasing requires 2 more
Then in pursuit of happiness she’s demands of doctor "more," as takes 4 more outside the door

Facts: 10% of aged 65+ have drug or drinking problem or addiction. Alcohol Use Disorder is the modern term. This means, of 60M 65+, 6M are addicted

40% of all alcohol related deaths in USA are in 65+ category

What are the four wives of an alcoholic? “Suffering Susan,” “Controlling Catherine,” “Wavering Winifred,” and “Punitive Polly.”

Since 2021 women drink more than men and suffer worst bodily damage due to excessive drinking.

Withdrawal is process of cutting out, or cutting back on, addictive substances. Also called ‘detoxification’, or ‘detox’. Often triggered in aged by going into nursing home, or rehab post-surgery, as now they are monitored on medication usage, and do not have access to alcohol at home.

Your mom may have a physical or psychological dependence on prescribed drug or alcohol. If physical dependence, her body will rely on taking the drug to feel normal. If she stops, she will have withdrawal symptoms.

Withdrawal symptoms may include: cravings, problems with sleep, irritability or agitation, feeling restless, trouble concentrating, mood changes, feeling depressed or anxious. Also, headaches, aches and pains, nausea, vomiting or diarrhoea. Severe could include confusion, and disorientation. Withdrawal symptoms can last for a few days or weeks. Cravings can last longer.

Tips to help your mom: know these things, Work closely with medical professionals, Have her doctor stop prescriptions for anti depressants and anti anxiety meds, Monitor med distro at home and keep meds in safe, Remove alcohol from house, Be patient, Pray, Be Humble.

  • A Positive Note to Negative Grandparents. How your GRANDS see you, and WHAT you can do about it.

First, the bitter pill to swallow. If you are alone as a grandparent, it is your fault. If your grandkids are not with you, if the couch beside you is empty, it is because they are economists--the cost of trying to be with you outweighs the benefit of them doing so. You are negative, narrow, mean and boring.

But you can change. You can turn this around, easily. Why? Because all grands want to be with their grandparents! I LOVED my Hard-Shell German/Pole Grammy & Grampy, and my sweet, Jesus-loving Hillbilly granny Nan.

Today I give 10 practical things you can do to fill your couch with Grands.

  • Who’s the Greatest Catholic? No, not St. Patrick (#2)

The Top-4 Greatest Catholics are, Mother Teresa (#4), Pope John Paul (#3), St. Patrick (#2), and...Coach Ray Meyer of DePaul Univ Basketball Team! (No, just kidding), but a different DePaul, one we have sadly forgotten about. Let his labor to "serve the next person before me who needs help," inspire us to do the same thing, at, say, Wal-Mart, or with our mom.

NOTE: Sorry for construction noise in background, but I am getting house ready for my mom to come home from rehab. Yes!

  • Praying for 3-Levels of Healing in Mom

    Contact Helping.Mom (we don’t spam)

To the same degree I reject television "faith healers," I believe fully that God heals. I have seen it, in Africa & America. And, the Bible is full of it--20X in Old Testament, 50X in New Testament, and Jesus 25X.

God heals every level of society, including individuals and groups, and "enemies" like Roman military commanders and slave-owners in Israel. He heals men, women, children, rich, poor, powerful & pauper.

God heals at 3-Levels: body, mind, spirit. For this reason, we must pray His healing of our moms at these same 3-levels: for her soul, her mind, and her body.

God heals for 4 reasons. And because of this, I set forth 7 things we must pray for healing for our moms (& ourselves).

  • Praying for Mom. How to P.R.A.Y. (apologies for tears)

    Contact Helping.Mom (we don’t spam)

Praying is our greatest work for mom & dad. But what does prayer look like? HOW can we do it? I created the acrostic P.R.A.Y. to help us pray soundly for our mom. Then, I lead us in a real prayer using P.R.A.Y.

    To pray is to P.R.A.Y.:

P=Praise God for His attributes and character

R=Repent of our shortcomings, that separate us from Him

A=Ask for the petitions on our heart for our mom

Y=Your will be done, "on earth as it is in heaven."

But HERE is our challenge: if God gives us nothing we ask for, will we still trust him? Though He take our mother, will we still yet love Him?
