I have experienced 3 hidden blessings from spending ample time with mom, amidst the grind of being her guardian, things I never would have expected, but now cling to as great sources of joy in my life. The first is my pride in her, and in her achievements each day, through surgery, therapy, rehab. I am proud of her, like my 6th daughter. The second is her side-splitting humor. She is hilarious at times. The third, life talks, on topics ranging from gaps in family history to the worst advice she ever received in life. Caregiving means we listen. When we do, we are blessed. I give you here some questions you may ask your parent.
What blessings do you find from spending great time with your aged parent? Please email me at [email protected]

There is a beautiful woman in FL, now octogenarian, who said to her daughter recently, "I feel unseen, unheard, and unimportant." What can we do as caregivers to help our mom or dad to BE seen, to BE heard, and to BE important? The Answer is to build their capacity through what I call "3 Gets & 3 Gives." Today we talk about these on helping.mom

This year my mom became a statistic. Will your's? I hope not. Consider: Each year in America 300,000 people over 65 are hospitalized due to broken bones due to falls. The average cost is $50,000 per surgery. The worst news, 30% of patients die from "successful" surgeries, and50% never walk again. This means only 20% of our moms and dads who fall will live a good quality of life after they fall.
We must, to quote Molly Hatchet, BEAT THE ODDS of our parents falling. Good News: 90% of falls occur in/around house, where we control all factors causing those falls. This means we can eliminate 85% of causes for 85% of falls!
IF we take simple proactive steps, now...
