The Henrico Citizen is among four news organizations in the nation selected to receive The Chronicle of Philanthropy’s Philanthropy & Nonprofit Accountability Fellowship, announced Monday by the Chronicle. The program, which includes a ,000 grant to each organization, was created to help train journalists at local news organizations around the country to improve their coverage of the role of nonprofits, foundations, and others involved in advancing the social good. At its Feb. 27 meeting, the Henrico Board of Supervisors will consider adoption of a revised version of an ordinance that would ban firearms from county-owned and county-operated facilities. The board previously opted to delay consideration of the proposed ordinance at its Dec. 12 meeting in order to allow staff members the chance to review comments received from the public. Henrico Police officials are investigating a homicide that occurred just after midnight Feb. 26 in Lakeside. At about 12:06 a.m., police responded to the 1600 block of Lakeside Avenue, not far from Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden, after reports of a shooting. Once on scene, officers located an adult male with apparent gunshot wounds and began life-saving measures. The man was transported to a local hospital, where he died from his injuries later Monday morning. Detectives are working to learn what transpired and to inform the man's next of kin. The Virginia Department of Aviation has announced the winners of the 2024 Virginia Aviation Art Contest, which included one student from Glen Allen who received an honorable mention award in the Senior Category. The House passed an environmental literacy bill to provide Virginia schools the tools to educate students about climate change by a 53-46 vote on Feb. 13. The bill, HB 1088, passed along party lines. The bill directs Virginia’s Board of Education to have criterias on climate change and environmental literacy that are based on peer-reviewed scientific sources for local school boards in Virginia. Black Maternal Health Week will be recognized annually in April, if Virginia lawmakers sign off on a proposed resolution.  The week, held from April 11-17, is intended to raise awareness that Black women are dying from childbirth at a disproportionately higher rate.  Sen. Henrico Schools teachers, staff and even supporters from Richmond and Hanover County took to the Henrico School Board’s online public forum for its Feb. 22 meeting to express the need for collective bargaining. Nearly 200 comments from HCPS staff urging the school board to support collective bargaining for HCPS teachers filled almost all of the 29 pages of the online forum. Warren Wilson White of Short Pump, Virginia, fell asleep in death after a long battle with dementia on February 15, 2024. Warren served in the United States Army and was a Paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division. He enjoyed the outdoors and spending time with friends and family. Shirley Ann Ceroni departed from this world peacefully at home on February 9, 2024, at the age of 73. Her absence leaves a deep void for those touched by her kindness, laughter, and radiant smile. Robert P. ‘Bob’ Krause, Jr., 85, of Henrico, VA passed away on Friday, February 16, 2024. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert P. Krause, Sr. and Rosamond A. Krause (nee) Mathews.
