Richard A. Henry, 64, of Henrico, passed away on Thursday, August 24, 2023 after a long illness. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Margie Henry. Martin, Roy M. Sr. “Big Daddy”, 93, found peace on August 22, 2023. He was born in Richmond, VA, on October 26, 1929 to Gordon Martin and Madeline Ashworth (Martin). He was the stepson of his beloved stepfather, Mike Landrum. He attended John Marshall HS (Cadet Corps Captain, Company E) and then Virginia Tech, class of 1950. Upon graduation, he joined the U.S. Navy and received his wings as a naval aviator in 1952, with a specialized ability to fly blimps. The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services has begun accepting applications for the 2023 Beehive Distribution Program.  Applications will be accepted through Sept. 12 from Virginia residents aged 18 and older. The program provides free equipment for assembling new beehives; qualified applicants are selected at random from qualifying applications received during the application period. Entities such as businesses, non-profit organizations, and government agencies are not eligible to receive beehive units. Mid-Atlantic restaurant and convenience store chain Sheetz announced Thursday that it will reduce diesel fuel prices by 35 cents per gallon in recognition of the 35th anniversary of Truck Driver Appreciation Week. The discount will be in effect Sept. 4-16. During the same timeframe, the company also is discounting its diesel exhaust fluid to 99 cents per gallon at the pump. Commonwealth Catholic Charities, a nonprofit in its centennial year of service, is opening an art gallery in Henrico. The gallery features a permanent collection of oil paintings by Richmond native and social activist Nora Houston, along with paintings, photography, jewelry, and textiles created by CCC friends, staff and clients from foster care, refugee resettlement, senior services, and supportive housing. On Sept.  1, the Virginia Spirits Board will launch a digital Virginia Spirits Passport that encourages individuals to explore and celebrate the commonwealth’s craft spirits offerings and experiences. A statewide outbreak of meningococcal disease has infected 27 people since June 2022 and killed five of them, and Virginia Department of Health officials have declared a statewide outbreak of the disease. The illness is caused by the bacteria called Neisseria meningitidis type Y. The cases have been reported in eastern, central, and southwest Virginia during the past 15 months – about three times the expected number of cases during the same timeframe, according to VDH officials.
