New COVID-19 cases are starting to increase in Henrico County, with almost 100 new cases reported Friday, according to the Virginia Department of Health. New reported cases had not reached 100 on a single day in the county since mid-February. The moving average of reported cases has risen accordingly, reaching about 65 daily cases. There were two new hospitalizations related to the virus, and one new virus-related death reported in Henrico on Friday, according to the VDH. Thirty-two Henrico County Public Schools teachers earned certification from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards this year – the most of any Virginia school system and the sixth-most of any system nationally. Henrico Schools officials Thursday announced details about the school system’s planned Summer Academy program, which will provide students of all grade levels with opportunities for enrichment, content-reinforcement, remediation and exploration. Two new variants of COVID-19, first identified in California, have been found in Virginia, according to the Virginia Department of Health. Variants B.1.427 and B.1.429 were identified in Virginia samples collected between December 2020 and February 2021 from state residents. The variants, which first emerged in California last summer, are associated with increased person-to-person transmission of COVID-19. Henrico officials hope to open the COVID-19 vaccination process to people in Phase 1C sometime in April, but they’re not quite ready to do so yet.
