Have you ever played Hide-and-Go-Seek in the dark? What about flashlight tag? Or the grownup version of these childhood games: trying to find candles or flashlights in the midst of a sudden power outage.

 

Sight begins when light enters the eye. This light triggers light-sensitive cells in the retina at the back of the eye. As a result, signals zoom along the optic nerve to the brain. The brain then makes sense of the signals, giving us the experience of seeing.

 

When you’re fumbling for the light switch in the middle of the night, you have to rely on senses other than sight; without light to help our eyes do the work they’re meant to do, we can’t see a thing. 

 

Matthew 7:7, “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.”

 

Imagine blindly seeking the things we need in life, in the dark and without the benefit of sight. God’s Word tells us we don’t have to stumble in the dark - we simply need to ask for help, to seek what we need, and to knock on the door. God’s loving guidance is freely available to us - if only we reach out to him.

 

Let’s pray.

 

Lord, we stumble in the darkness without your light. Lead us to the cross, and remind us continually to turn to you for answers and direction. Amen.
