David Hochberg is joined in studio by 19th Ward Alderman Matt O’Shea and Chicago Police Memorial Foundation Executive Director Maureen Biggane to host this year’s sixth annual Vest-a-thon.
The show begins with Chicago Police Memorial Foundation Executive Board President Sandra Wortham, who shares the story of her brother, Chicago Police Officer Thomas E. Wortham IV, who was killed in the line of duty.
Pro-Tech representative Gary Stryker follows with an in-depth discussion about bulletproof vests. Then Commander Bryan Spreyne of the 8th (Chicago Lawn) District joins to talk about the tragic shootings of officers in his district over the past three years. Chief of Detectives Antoinette Ursitti also emphasizes the importance of protective vests.
Officer Juan Alba-Chavez and his wife, Yvonne Muñoz, share their emotional story about Juan being shot on just his sixth day on the job and receives a new vest as a token of appreciation for his service.
Later, Kathy O’Neil, assistant director of the CPD Counseling Unit, highlights the counselors’ ongoing support for officers. Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling then discusses the vest drive, the challenges his officers face, and why new vests are vital to their safety.
The program also features Nallely Silva, social media and events specialist for sponsor Mariano’s, and Julie Harringan of the Original Pancake House, who share details on Alderman O’Shea’s “Get Behind the Vest” Pancake Breakfast fundraiser.
The show concludes with Maureen Biggane, former Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 7 President John Catanzara Graham, and businessman and community leader Willie Wilson, who extend a generous invitation to David and Alderman O’Shea.
To close out the Vest-a-thon, Chicago Police Chaplain Father Dan Brandt delivers a final prayer as The Bagpipes and Drums of the Emerald Society (who provided music the entire show) perform their rendition of “Amazing Grace.”
