The Greek philosopher Heraclitus lived about 2500 years ago. I pretty much only know three things about him.I heard that he was the one who said, “No one steps into the same river twice.”Very deep.I’ve also heard that most of the people who knew Heraclitus thought he was a jerk.That is tough. To be famous, or infamous, in such a way that 2500 years later, when all the other details of your life have been lost, the one thing that people still know about you is that you were a jerk.Which leads us to the third and last thing I know about Heraclitus. He also said one of the truest things I’ve ever heard …“Character is destiny.”True, and wise, and worthy of deep reflection, but also, how tragic it is that this guy’s own character proved his own point in the worst possible way. It reminds me of a quote from the poet Maya Angelou that Tina and I have framed in our living room …“… people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”I’ve been asked to give some predictions about 2024 but honestly I have none to offer accept this one from Heraclitus the jerk. For our world, for our country, for the future of our democracy, for businesses and families and friendships, and for ourselves, I believe you can absolutely count on it to always somehow come true …“Character is destiny.”That’s what I think I know about 2024.Perhaps take some time to consider how true it is for you, and then start this fresh new year by remembering that people will never forget how you made them feel.Then get busy building yourself a beautiful life.
