The hotter things get, the cooler under the collar we all need to stay.So if you haven’t already heard it, let me introduce you to your new catch-phrase: Stay breezy.I’m not sure who started using it first around here, but now we’re all doing it and it works.Breezy is a whole perspective and attitude, and has come to mean several things …Like, not holding on to negative things. We don’t ignore them or pretend they don’t exist, but we try to let them go. Acknowledge the bad stuff in the news today, but don’t hold onto it for so long that it has time to get under your skin. Let it pass like the breeze.Breezy doesn’t mean you can’t have a serious or deep conversation, but don’t do anything to suck all the oxygen out of the room. Keep the air moving. It also means give yourself and everyone else more space, more time, more freedom to be off, to fumble, to be imperfect. How many times have you been the first car stopped at an intersection and if you pause for even half a breath when the light turns green someone behind you honks? Or are you the honker?! So not breezy, bro! Breezes never rush or push.Breezy means not needing to push your way of doing things, your way of seeing things, or your opinions onto anyone. Breezes are soft. So soft they’re not even wind. They comfort and soothe. They express but they don’t blow anyone over. “Uh oh, there’s a breeze outside. Lock down the windows and close the shutters,” is something no one said ever.Breezy is also something you don’t say without smiling. Breezy is the “hakuna matata” of emotional states. It means, “No worries. I’m content to go with the flow. I’m grateful. I’m just happy to be here.”Breezy is healthy. No one who practices breeziness has high blood pressure. Breezy isn’t anxious. Breezy doesn’t do insomnia. Breezy purrs. It doesn’t bark. Finally, staying breezy doesn’t just happen. You work at it. The amazing thing about breezy is it looks as casual as a passing mood. But real breezy is not an accident. Breezy is the result of focused, consistent intention. The thing I like best about staying breezy is how it’s something I actually have the power to put out into the world. The human world is a deeply imperfect and flawed place. It always has been. Maybe it always will be. I don’t know. But I know this .. if you’re sitting around waiting for things to get better in order to get in a better mood … if you’re waiting for the outer world to change in order for your inner world to change … if you waiting for others to be content before you’ll be content … if you’re waiting for the world to lead with the good before you lead with the good … then, my friend, you’re going to be waiting for a long, long time. It’s a messed up world with a lot of problems. And for a lot of us it’s also blazing hot out there right now. But in here, inside my chest on this last Sunday of July, 2023 … I’m breezy. It’s how I get past the bad and build a good day. It’s how all of us can take the imperfect materials the world hands us and still build ourselves a beautiful life.Stay breezy.
