We’re well into the Holiday season now and some of you are letting it slip by. So I came up with an Emergency Guide to Holiday Happiness. It’s easy to remember. There are just three steps:STOP, DROP, and ROLL.First, STOP.Stopping is sometimes the hardest thing of all, but if you’re one of those people whose life is in constant motion then stopping is the only way you’ll ever catch up with yourself. Stop and notice the world around you. Stop and notice the people around you. Most importantly, stop to count your blessings. It seems like blessings should be pretty self-evident and not require regular counting, but they aren’t self-evident, and they do need counting. Humans have to fight to remember how good things are. You see, every time things get better in your life you raise the bar and make it the new normal. Now your happiness depends on clearing that higher bar. If it does you’ll raise the bar again. This is why one person can have a whole lot more than another and still be no happier. The happiness of both the prince and the pauper depend on life clearing the bar. And there’s only one antidote to this vicious cycle—intentionally counting our blessings and intentionally resetting the bar. So the first step to holiday happiness is to stop, fight to count your blessings, and realize that the fight means life is good.First STOP, then DROP.Drop means now that you’ve stopped why not go ahead and sit down for a while. Sit down for a good read. Sit down and watch the wind blow. Sit down for a good meal and some good conversation. Sit down and settle into the present moment. Stopping is one thing, but dropping means you’re staying for a while. As you should. This season make your biggest present being present. I know it seems like you have a lot to do to get wherever you’re going, and I’m all for working hard to chase a dream, but life can’t always be just chasing. Life is short and none of us can afford to keep putting off living the moments we’re supposedly working so hard to achieve. Is this the perfect moment to stop and drop? No, but it’s a good one. It’s so often true that perfect is the enemy of good. Life will never be perfect, but life is often good. Take the win. Stop, Drop and take time with the good, now, while it’s still here. That’s what makes it perfect.STOP, DROP, and finally, ROLL.There are only two kinds of people in the world who roll around. People who are on fire and need the flames put out, and children. Which would you rather be? You’ve already stopped. You’ve already dropped. Which means you’re not that far from the floor now. So why not seal this happiness deal with some good ol ’fashioned childlikeness. If you want to be as carefree and happy as a child then let that kid out. Yes, the kid who still lives somewhere deep down inside you. Let ‘em out and let ‘em roll around on the floor for a while. Dare to play. Dare to spend some time each day—especially during the holidays—doing nothing productive except having fun.So there you have it. The House Whisperer’s Emergency Guide to Holiday Happiness.STOP and count your blessings.DROP down and take time to live the moment.ROLL around and have some fun.It all seems quite non-productive, but the truth is you’ll be busy building yourself a beautiful life.
